My 15yr old bird dog is deaf, and I'm pretty sure I contributed to it. He pointed over 500 pheasants before retirement.
 
You'll be surprised of the acuity of a dog's hearing. My first setter pup on her first hunt was on top of Mauna Kea, cattle grazing land, 13K feet above sea level, strong winds. Her first shotgun shot sound was +300 yards away downhill down wind. I could barely hear the sound but it startled her; she ran 15 feet then turned to see what it was. She was already conditioned to .22 rounds from a starter gun.

Go to the hunting forum as ask bird and waterfowl hunters there. A large part of training involves gun introduction. There are many nuances in dog behavior as to when to back off or push on. You hear the phrase, 'learn to read your dog' mentioned a lot.
