I was in a large store full of people a couple months ago . There was a woman in her 30.s ? That was dressed classy . Like 1950s southern belle classy. I had to take a close second look . She caught me and just stood there and smiled at me with class. Her attitude alone was more pleasant than anything I've seen in the PNW in some time. It was a breath of fresh air.

I like to travel and like to play a little game on my way back home. Which gate, without looking at the signs, is boarding for Sea-Tac or PDX? The planes on the way to Texas, Florida, Arizona, the Carolinas, have nicely dressed and often beautiful people. Find the dumpster-fire of earth tones, anime shirts, BCGs, and green hair thats short on girls and ling on guys, and you've found the PDX/Sea-Tac gate.

Oh boy.... IMO class is about more than how one dresses, but since that is the subject:

How I dress has really varied thru the years. As a young lad I was sent to a Catholic school and uniforms were mandatory. I didn't think about it much. Mom made my uniforms but I had good shoes from Sears. When not in school I wore hand me downs, mostly denims, but church on Sunday was always a suit and tie. Mom wore a dress and a scarf was mandatory... Dad was an atheist that didn't go to church but he dressed nice otherwise. It was the fifties and we were S.Calif people so we also wore beachy clothes.

I was kicked out of Catholic school for being disruptive (who woulda thunk???) and then wore whatever the S. Calif uniform of the times was... I did chores and odd jobs to be able to afford to buy my own cords and sand boots rather than hand me downs... life is tough. My first job was with AT&T as a Central Office equipment installer, so I wore clothes suited to physical work... early 70s were still hippie years and several times my hair got long, I grew a fu manchu stache and tried to wear tie-die wife beater style tshirts to work... got sent home. Off hours wear was jeans and tshirts.

I quit AT&T to go into the U.S. Coast Guard... ya'll know what I wore then.

In 1980 I got out of the USCG and moved from San Diego to La Grande OR... went to work in a two-way radio shop. Dress was jeans and flannel shirts... very logger-centric. My only tip of the hat to western wear was cowboy boots. Ruined my back and switched to hunting boots.

Next line of work was in a Credit Union... after years of dressing down, I thought dressing up would be fun... it wasn't... I found out I hate being strangled by a tie.

Then Home Inspections... although some home inspectors wear jeans, I thought it best to present a more professional appearance... durable work pants and a monogrammed polo/golf type shirt.

Then Air Life of Oregon NE Oregon Rep.... slacks or suits.

Back to home inspections.

Back to the radio shop... due to health problems, then layoff and permanent retirement.

I still have suits and business wear. I used to wear them to funerals or on cruises for formal night but all that is changing too. Besides I've gained a lot of weight and can't really fit into those anymore.

Going to buy groceries is jeans or shorts and tshirt, same for going to lunch. I do have a few pairs of slacks and button down shirts or golf shirts for occasions that merit such.

Won't be buried, having cremation and a graveside veteran's sendoff.

Boring, this.... oh well.

A Texas woman wouldn't be caught dead even leaving the bedroom without makeup and hair done. (I ain't mad at daisy dukes;):D)

At least it was still like that last time I was visiting family.

It might just be that the degradation of civilization is higher up here in the socialist PNW?

Yeah, maybe the PNW is all that's really gone down the schitter. I like your optimism!

Or this T-Shirt:
"I pooped today."

Seniors???

A house at 21!? How the bubblegum? I dont even have enough credit to put payments on an iphone none the less a privlaged bubblegum house!

There used to be a lot of programs for 1st time home buyers. The Wall Street scandals screwed that up.

I'm also old enough to think of Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers, Lauren Bacall, Bogart and others of that era when I think of class.

Here's lookin at YOU kid!!

I try hard not to confuse dressing classy with acting classy, they have never been an infallible indicator of a person's quality. Far too often, I've seen fine clothes stuffed with coarse people.

IMO there is truth to that, yet I find my way thru the world with sight first, thought second. I'm always evaluating those around me one way or another. I make assumptions about people that could be right or wrong, yet I mean them no harm... as long as they don't harm me.

When it comes to customers that came into my shop... I held my assumptions at bay. I often encountered well dressed people that acted like azzhats, as well as poorly dressed nutballs. YMMV

I'm going for the late '60's---Viet Nam, protests, hippy culture, legal frequent abortion, welfare abuse, pres. Johnson, government official suicides, drugs.

^^^ THIS

My grandpa was from the East Coast, and tho he was once a logger, he didn't go anywhere in public w/o a hat and tie. When my dad retired from his first job in Calif and went to work in New York in the 70s, ties were still the norm.

Unfortunately when we go to events my daughter will ask what the dress code is (she dresses nicer then most as the norm) and I often tell her to dress nice but comfortable because it's the PNW and there will always be people there that will be so dressed down that no one will notice.

Speaking of Texas, last few years we have had to make several trips to the Houston area, and we both noticed that women generally took the time and effort to put them selves together. Men are sort of business casual for the most part! BUT, the one thing we both noticed was: almost every one was friendly and outgoing, like they were happy and genuinely happy to see you, even if it was a formality, it was still courteous, and the people seemed more genuine then many other places we have been! In fact, most of the southern states have that same feel! If it were not for the heat, humidity, and flatness, we could be happy in Texas!

Another observation we have made, in areas where there are a lot of Hispanics, they are always well dressed and very polite and even friendly, far more then the the rest of the folks! Arizona is a big one, i have seen far more attractive Hispanics then white folks, and they are far nicer to be around!

And thats fine, but people under 40 seem to try to look homeless. Not casual, but homeless.
Wait I know the answer to this, look at the clothing marketed to the younger generations, all ripped, torn, cut or otherwise tattered.... Clothing our generation would have scrapped, younger folks seem to gravitate to... And pay obscene amounts of money for. That kinda explains the clothing aspect.

Hygiene is another issue, I'm nearing 60 and wouldn't think of stepping out unwashed, unbrushed, unshaven and without clean teeth and fresh breath... These don't seem to be the highest priorities for younger folks, shopping in their pajamas or out at the mall
In the slippers... Looking like they just rolled out of bed... :s0054:

Our society has become so relaxed that it's acceptable. I admit I dress the most casual I ever have, now relagated to button down shirts, jeans and usually work type boots. A far cry from dress slacks, dress shirts and wingtips of the days long past for me.

But I do agree, seems our society is degrading in the area of pride in personnel appearance...

I don't care all that much what most people think I look like.

Generally I shave once a week and otherwise don't have enough hair to bother with a comb.

Before I go out in public I usually am wearing clean street clothes/etc., unless I am going into town to get parts for equipment and I am in the middle of some property work. But the only time you will find me in a suit is at a wedding or funeral - otherwise it is almost always jeans (sometimes quite faded and worn) and informal shirt. I am totally about comfort and not about caring what people think of how I dress.

Don't like that?

Too bad soo sad.

What I've seen though is that PNW folks are generally like PNW weather. Never real hot, never really bitter cold. As nice, good looking and hospitable southerners are, their bad people are the worst.

Or tattoos on necks, behind ears, on hands and forearms where traditionally those places have always been for when there isn't anywhere left to put them or your a gangbanger. Now I see kids in $300 Nike outfits with $50 tatts showing in places they shouldn't imo. Maybe that's off topic but as someone with a lot of ink I find it super tacky.
If a tattoo artist has any kind of self respect. Or respect for the art they normally refuse to do hands, neck, or face unless you are heavily tattooed.

Boy, you got that right! The one that really crackes me up is Florida, it seems all the ladies have silicon enhancements and way over taned, and they think money is everything, but forgot manors and good language! As long as they never speak, the eye candy is worth it!
