I am almost 70 and don't remember anything like that. Of course I live in the Willamette Valley.
I also grew up in the Willamette Valley, both Portland and Salem, usually around W.U. or Monmouth, or P.S.U. and all the ladies were dressed nice young and old alike, same with Down Town Albany, Lebanon, and Sweet Home! And i'm almost 50! :p

Seriously, you can find most of the roots of the Great Unwashening in the Sixties if you look hard enough... largely starting with the Great Society when LBJ got people to sell their pride, dignity and self-reliance for a taxpayer-funded handout.

That was gone ten years later when I was born, assuming it ever existed around Puget Sound outside of folks my grandparents' age.

I try hard not to confuse dressing classy with acting classy, they have never been an infallible indicator of a person's quality. Far too often, I've seen fine clothes stuffed with coarse people.

People used to dress up to get on a airplane. Now when you fly it's like everybody just stepped off the bus from New Jersey. Same thing with Las Vegas. It's like they let anybody into a casino now.
I agree just got been here for 3days now and it's a fricking zooo

Class? I would settle for simple manners. But yes, they are both going the way of cursive writing. Parents aren't teaching their children these things anymore. But they're sure teaching them to be entitled.

And this doesn't apply to everyone of course. But class and manners are becoming more and more rare.

A house at 21!? How the bubblegum? I dont even have enough credit to put payments on an iphone none the less a privlaged bubblegum house!

As far as the topic is concerned, screw suits. When im "going out" i wear jeans boots white t and throw on my A2 jacket. Consequently thats also me "dressing up". Normaly youll find me in a carhart sweatshirt jeans and leather vans or leather chuck taylors. All stars remain the best looking shoes ever designed IMO.
Keep the clothes simple, plain colors and let the shoes shine

Buying a house in the 70s and 80s early 90s was possible for regular working people. Finding one on a owner finance contract was possible ( especially on beater houses ). Some cash down with A written agreement and a
hand shake worked. No realtor, inspections, closing cost, loan fees, .all these things can be done buy the seller / buyer . In Portland you are now required to pay for a energy use inspection before you can sell your house. Another D hidden tax . Now with the insane prices and regulations it would be hard to find those deals . It might be possible if you meet a old school type person out of the city limits

I've seen fine clothes stuffed with garbage and cheap clothes stuffed with morals , honesty and respect for others.

Sign of the times and generations influence in and of itself.
Gone (for the most) are the days of relying on someones word as commitment.
Gone are the days (unless you/they are old-school throw-back types. I find them refreshing, like breathing in fresh mountain air) of common courtesy.
Gone are the days (again for the most) is respect. Be it (not only) to someone slightly older than they, or elderly in the same sense.
Yes Maam, No Sir, or again, common sensible courtesy.

As an example:
Taking a trip, driving along, anywhere. Pull in-to a fast food drive-up and place and order. Why is it I am always the one to say thank-you, when if it weren't for hungry people buying food where you work, you'd potentially be looking for a job elsewhere. IIRC, one time in past year, a fast food employee looked at me and said "thank-you"...enjoy your day. With enthusiasm. I was shocked. Naturally, I brought the scenario to her attention and recognition, that SHE, made my day. I thanked her for that.

Society is what it is, unfortunately.
I continue on my ways, giving, what I expect in return without thought of it all.
Most times for not, sometimes I get surprised, and have a better day.

I have a LOT of trouble understanding why people today are so willing to pay $100.00+ for a pair of Jeans that are already full of Holes? Paying $100.00+ for the pair of Jeans is CRAZY to begin with but when they're already worn full of Holes, well...
Hell, I am a member of the younger generation and I don't understand! It's like high schoolers like myself have become to lazy to rip their own jeans so they spend and extra $60 for a pair of jeans that has less material than my wranglers. WHY?!

If this part of the state is any indication, by and large, yes it is. It is saddening to be sure that most people look like a train-wreck when out and have manners consistent with said appearance. I'm glad my parents and grandparents drummed into my head good manners and grooming. If they like it or not, my two wee ones are receiving the same training.

The odd thing is I can't really pinpoint when it changed in our society, though it was certainly within my lifetime. For that matter, I can't figure out the "why" either. But something did change.
I'm going for the late '60's---Viet Nam, protests, hippy culture, legal frequent abortion, welfare abuse, pres. Johnson, government official suicides, drugs.

I'm Old enough that more than one of my Friends are Crossing over the River and I do own and wear a Suit and Tie for those Funerals as a sign of Respect. I'll be in my Army Uniform for my own.

Not long ago I attended one of those and assisted in escorting Three 30 something anal cranial types who were attempting to be disruptive. The Gentleman had been the local Sheriff and these Clowns thought they "Owed" him something. I'm not sure the Preacher was Armed but I AM SURE All of the Men were and several of the Women were. Two of the Three were escorted all the way to Jail.
