Is a Gun Art, if it is still Useful?

I have heard it said that Art is only art if that is it's only purpose. There were protests of the motorcycle show at the Guggenheim, as the bikes were still useful.

If I hang my hat on the Venus de Milo... is it no longer art? That opinion is poorly thought out.

Useful people appreciate useful art. They respect the art and artist and what it takes to produce it, and understand it's message or purpose. It "speaks" to them. They want it be purposeful to brighten a life lived.

Useless people like useless art. They are also listening to it's message but only appreciate it if it speaks gibberish. The moment it informs or elevates, if serves a purpose... and is no longer art. The artist is lauded but not for what he does but who he knows.
