If Iran was stupid enough to attack us on the mainland, it would likely be with existing sleeper cells. I could also see them using a low yield nuclear weapon to achieve a large scale EMP blast or two to take out our electric grid. It is clearly a weak link in our countries defense. So I had this neighbor who worked for a US defense contractor during the cold war. He would fly into countries bordering the soviet union as part of a team to set up surveillance equipment. One of those places he went to was Iran before the islamic revolution. Typically they would stay at a military base and would have a detachment of locals to guard/watch them. At this base somewhere in Iran, one of the conscripts guarding his team tried to commit suicide. He was using a piece of wood like a 2x4 with a nail hammered in from one side and sticking out the other, he was repeatedly hitting himself in the forehead with it as his method.
