I rekon its accomplished in the selector section with some cool gizmos and cams configured to work on the bolt carrier to keep it open-bolt in auto fire, then I'd guess the semi-auto uses pretty much the same as a M16.

If only we could peek under the hood!!

IIRC a number of early designs of sub machine guns fired from an open bolt.
