I SHOULD have been born earlier, because I KNOW that I should have been a P51D fighter pilot in WWII.... :(
You just like the tiger/shark mouths painted over the front intakes (I know I do!)... they're my second favorite WWII fighter. ;)
Wrong aircraft, you're thinking of the Curtiss P-40

Republic P-47 Thunderbolt

I know the P-51 well and that is spelled the end of Nazis. With drop fuel tanks the fighter planes did not have turn back when the B-17 flew bombing missions over Europe. With that said I like the P-47 Thunderbolt better. Eight .50 caliber machines guns, unguided rockets, and can carry bombs made it made formidable fighter/bomber. Also it had armor to protect the pilot and the cockpit was roomy compared to the P-51 cockpit too.

Love the Mustang, but the F4U Corsair will always be my favorite. Great article. It was nice that they had both of these planes at the last airshow in Hillsboro

My grandfather flew spitfires and mustangs during WWII with 234 Sqn RAF (He was RAAF pilot on posting into an RAF squadron they did a lot of that with Australians). He loved the spitfire but said the mustang was the best Aircraft he ever flew, he ended up flying missions 2 days after Dday and continued on through the rest of the european war. His last mission was a deep escort mission to the Eagles nest with 617 "Dambusters" squadron dropping 22,000lb 'grand slam' bombs, as he said it was a pity that Hitler wasn't home!

2 planes, one pilot! OR............Fork tailed devil
2nd Best Fighter:
Never actually used in combat, but was a few weeks from doing so, still, would have caused SERIOUS head aches against the Japs!

3rd greatest!
This is a test, see if you can figure out what it is! Was equal to every thing it went up against for the first year and a half!

The Bearcat is one of my favorites. Underrated, but its's still no P51:p

No more beer for me. On my 3rd edit - that is the Mig-1.

Gents, I always enjoyed reading about the sheer ruggedness of the P47- coming home with tree branches smashed into the wings, multiple cylinders shot out, etc

That was one of the advantages of its air-cooled radial engine; it could take a lot more abuse. You get one bullet in a coolant line in a '51 and you might as well just bail now, Jack.

Still, it would have been a privilege and an honor to have flown either one in the Big One, gents!
