    I don't know when the guard duties changed from GI's to Civilians (after 1980 I suppose) but I'll tell you one thing it undermines the security of every military instillation in this country!!!!

    Its sadly true in many places now. When I was in they disarmed us then issued us nightsticks. Too many guardhouse John Wayne AD's. They weaned us down slowly though. M16s with ammo to .45s with ammo but not to be inserted into said. 45s to. 45s with no ammo to nightsticks. I thought that was mighty thoughtful of them. Not that it mattered much, we were just Fulda Gap speedbumps anyway.
