All the programs like welfare and food stamps need to go back the original design of the system. It was designed as a temporary aid in tough times. It wasnt designed nor should it provides luxuries and they should all have a limited time base so it makes people got off their lazy butt's and go find some work.

I couldn't agree with you more. That said, without action it will never change. What can we all do about it?

The most recent Department of Agriculture report on the general characteristics of the SNAP program's beneficiaries says that in the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, 2010:

47- percent of beneficiaries were children under age 18.
8- percent were age 60 or older
41 -percent lived in a household with earnings from a job — the so-called "working poor."

The average household received a monthly benefit of $287.

I am the general manager of a small business. We have between 30-50 employees, depending on the economy at the time. I have received phone calls from State agencies inquiring about individuals that were claiming unemployment(while working overtime, no less) and claiming food stamps fraudulently. These individuals paid back what they stole with interest. At the same time, I have employed people that want to work, but must make $9 an hour to qualify for any help. Making an additional $150 a month after taxes loses his family about $1,200 a month in benefits. I am talking about a person that wants to work and is a valued enough employee that we give him raises based on his merit. He respectfully declines those raises because of the huge loss they represent. Where is the middle ground? How do we break the cycle if we cannot help "just a bit"? Basically, this hard-working person must go completely on the dole or acquire a job that pays him $80,000 a year. There is no "gray area". The establishment of an income tax started the socialism ball rolling. The establishment of Social Security gave it huge momentum. The returns at the ballot box from those receiving the handouts(sometimes 2nd, 3rd or even 4th generation handouts) and the palm greasing of those elected to keep these things in check allowed it to spiral out of control. Those that are or were outraged have been sedated by decades of apathy and a fear of being labeled as someone who either represent's racial or class oppression(or both, they are not mutually exclusive). It has gone too far. I have seen far too many people pay $450 into taxes in a year and receive a $3,800 tax return?!?!? If someone can explain to me how an individual get's his/her own taxes back and a third of mine I will gladly shut up. We hear about "sustainability" from our "leaders". I wonder when someone will lead by example. Kip

Justice! If she manages to avoid the slam I'm sure the government will do a fine job chiseling off a big chunk of her winnings- of course then she'll be broke again and back on welfare...Never mind- we lose. As usual...

What pisses me off more is the people that use their Oregon Trail card to by as much bottled water as they can, dump the water in the grocery store parking lot, redeem the bottles for cash, then return to the store to buy beer & smokes.
