Only one gun? At a time or forever? I say that because I've been owbing a Glock 32 in 357 Sig for a few months now. But today a set of Hogue rubber finger groove grips that were backordered around Thanksgiving arrived today so I dug the Sig P-229 in the same 357 Sig caliber out of the safe to use as my owb and put the Glock away. So today my answer would be the Sig. Why? Because I really like the 357 Sig for personal defense against man or beast.

For fun, I'm going to assume this means one gun forever, and strictly as it comes from the factory. Because there are too many loopholes and gotchas where one gun could end up being like many guns when configured with different grip models, slides, barrels etc. With that being the case, a Glock 45 would be a difficult animal to beat. Not a whole lot of things that pistol can't do competently but it doesn't really do anything exceptionally.

A Sig 938 because its the most firepower you can conceal just about anywhere on you for any occasion and still shoots well enough like a larger gun.

My Beretta M9A3. Mags are plentiful and readily available. It handles +P ammo. Has night sights, and the Beretta 92 platform is what I shoot best for 9mm handguns. Also has a threaded barrel in case I want to put a can on it.

A 3rd Gen G17.

I like 9mm and have a lot of mags for it.

I shoot my Beretta moe betta but it has to big of a grip for my wife and she shoot's the G17 like a champ so I know I can always hand it to her and feel confident she has my back.

Now I answered this as a hypothetical cuz God help us if this were ever reality - I carry a variety depending on my mood and the occasion because one gun doesn't work the best in every situation.

And cuz 'Merica of course!

SIG P-229 Legion SAO.

Compact. Eminently concealable. Shoots as well as its full-sized brother, the 226. Cocked and locked carry. Straight trigger, close to a good 1911ish trigger, excellent factory night sights, superb ergonomics, soft shooting, sublime accuracy... and 15+1 with 17 round spare mags,

Only one for ever and ever and ever?

Commander size 1911 with .38 Super Auto and 9mm barrel's. That's 10+1 capacity, can practice with 9mm and carry .38 Super for self defense.
I'm old and predictable. Make mine a 45. Oh, wait, it is!

If you could only carry one handgun for protection...which would it be and why?
Hmmm depends on how you define handgun. Fe this is the size of a handgun (I guess it is a "handgun"?) but is much more capable due to stock and non moving red dot.
Or full auto machine pistol Fe like vz61
Also if protection from dangerous animals such as bear then powerful revolver might be more appropriate or something like this 10mm

I can't fault the logic of .357 Sig. Even basic s&b range ammo is 645fpe out of a 6" barrel which is close to double many 9mm range ammo out of 4" barrel.

I can't fault that logic. I was thinking same thing if one used the assumption for everyday, all regular situations Fe office, non SHTF, etc etc. I think the OP's question is too open ended and it totally depends on what assumptions people make about what he means.

Yes, this is the logic.
When I hear "only one gun" so many of the options given the size of even a mid size compact gu , the gun limits where if can be taken, hidden or carried in modern society. When I think of "one gun" i want one that can go with me the most places possible.
