In 1989 George HW Bush banned the import of "assault weapons". This put an end to a lot of foreign designs coming in to the country.

If that was to go away, and it can be, what semi-automatic versions of foreign military rifles would you be most interested in and why?
Galil and FAL are gonna be the top two. The Finnish Valmet RK95 and M76 rifles would be awesome too. So would the Dae Woo rifle as well.

Daewoo K2. One of the best most reliable weapons ever made. Probably the inspiration for the piston-driven ar15 combining some of the best features of the FN FAL, AK47, HK, and the AR15 all in one very reliable and still very accurate rifle.

I would have to buy a Valmet or Galil.

You mean like THIS Galil that I've now owned for almost three decades? :D

The South Korean military is sitting on warehouses stacked with crates of brand new Garands and M1 Carbines that were provided to them during and after the Korean war. along with tons and tons of ammo for them.
They'll never be issued or used,, the US taxpayers paid for them, they need to be sent back here where they belong so that we can have them.
Not to mention the huge numbers of NFA weapons like the 1917 Browning, the BARs , the M2 Carbines, and select-fire M14s.
