i know nothing about older guns. My mom is wanting to upgrade to a newer model revolver. I know nothing about this other than the basics. What model is this, from what year, and worth?

Smith and wesson military and police model of 1905 pre war (most likely pre 1920 based on the grips on it) try searching on the S&W forum and you will find a list of aprox manufacture date by sn#. I payed about 300 for one in a bit better shape than that a few years ago.

S&W M&P pre model 10 style, 300+ if in good condition. Still a good revolver.
