ID this AK "sight"??

Came across these pictures and I have no idea what type of "sight" this is. It looks like they are doing some marksmanship training. It doesn't look like a red dot. Possibly just used as a training aid? Any ideas?

It looks like it may be a sight picture training device lets the instructor look at the sight picture from the side. Usually this set up uses mirrors.
