I can see other groups using the exemption of transferring firearm to family members for political gains. I bet pro gay marriage groups will use it to claim discrimination in states that to not recognize gay marriages. In states that do, gay marriages will never be repealed or gay ex-spouses suddenly become criminals.

Universal Background Checks should really scare people. The current system doesn't have any oversight. The FBI security policy specifies the physical aspects of who may see the data and where the data is physically located. Nothing in their framework specifies how data is stored; ie, data is encrypted, information pipe is secured (TSL - Transport Layer Security), backup procedures (rotating media or is it destroyed or sent out to private firms to be destroyed), etc. I can't find any information that specifies any oversight to their operations.

Some gun owners I'm afraid, just want to appease the libs and think background checks don't really affect them much. And they won't, short term. I know for me it would be just another inconvenience and wouldn't change my life drastically. Others will be affected more, collectors, frequent traders and those that value privacy from Big Brother.
Then we have felons, people not legally allowed to possess a firearm. This of course is another heated subject. These people, should a stricter background check become law, will suddenly have fewer options to obtain a weapon. Of course with an estimated 350,000,000 guns in the U.S. they won't have much trouble getting their hands on, if not their first choice in a gun, at least something pretty close.
The only way I can think of stopping an Adam Lanza is outlawing and confiscating all guns except perhaps ones sold and kept secure at gun clubs and ranges. Penalize anyone possessing a gun with an automatic five years jail time! Offer a $1,000 reward for turning in someone with a firearm. This is an Idea that will work! Everybody with common sense knows this right?
Let's assume the Libs eventually get their dream, an all out gun ban! Fast forward a few years. What will America look like? Obviously gun deaths will go down. How about mass killings? Evil people will soon discover more efficient methods to murder large groups of people than a mere Semi-auto. Murder rates? Any bodies guess. Robberies and violent crime will almost certainly skyrocket with criminals knowing the law abiding are unarmed. Stabbings will dominate the news and new laws about blade length limits and other useless feel good restrictions will be debated. Suicides may even increase because increased violence is cause for depression.
Not every gun grabber is part of a New World Order, communist, globalist take your pick conspiracy. A lot of them actually believe if just one kid's life can be saved then let's try! Their emotions rule their thought process. They don't have an answer about where to draw the line when saving lives verses freedom though. Stop alcohol and you stop DUI deaths right? Lower the speed limit to 45, make pedestrians wear helmets, outlaw football, all life saving ideas.
Unfortunately, too many gun grabbers really are part of a New World Order, communist, globalist, socialist, take your pick conspiracy! They use every tragedy to further their cause and they are definitely going to get all they can out of this one!

I do not understand you comment about Adam Larza's mother? She was so ignorant he had to kill her to get at her weapons, Is that what you are saying? Or do you think she just opened her safe and offered him her collection? That the safe was unlocked, what do you expect..The mom was dead, You think Adam should have locked it after he stole the guns???

I kind of like the idea of a "Passive Background Check." I think that a good place to do this is on a credit report. Everyone would have a yes (default to yes) unless the NICS reported a NO to the credit agencies. The automatic yes shields law abiding citizens by including all those who don't own guns or even want to. If you sold a firearm you would be able to check out the buyer (a good idea, even if it were not a legal requirement) to make sure they were not prohibited by the NICS or out-of-state with a phony driver's license. I think many of us would do this for sales that didn't require a background check just for peace of mind.

The best thing about this is that you could keep a record of the check to prove that you were responsible in making the sale, but it doesn't infringe on the purchaser any more than ordinary transactions. A credit check wouldn't show a link to a firearm for either buyer or seller, and many businesses could conduct the check if the seller did not have access to the credit agencies.

All these are good reasons the government doesn't want the checks done this way.

National firearms carry reciprocity (no CHL needed= shall not be infringed) and right to buy and sell firearms anywhere in the United States as long as the person is not a felon or legally mentally unstable? That sounds about right to me like I believe the founding fathers intended it to be.
