    Back story:

I've been developing a ganglion cyst in my hand, right at the base of my middle finger near the joint. Doc tried to aspirate it several weeks ago in the office, but it came back with a vengeance. It was poking out, and painful. Couldn't lift as much at the gym either. So we decided to do surgery. BUT, once they called and told how much my responsibility would be, I said thanks but no thanks. There had to be another way.

Fast forward to yesterday. I was just about to call the doc back and reschedule for surgery. I could afford it OK, but I was not looking forward to shelling out the dough for such a stupid simple procedure. I got so fed up that I flared my fingers out as far as they'd go, and smashed my hand on the granite countertop as hard as I could tolerate.

Surprise! No more bump! Looks like I managed to bust the cyst all by myself. I will employ this technique again as needed!

what happened did it pop like a zit?

or did you pound it back into your body only to pop up some where else?

Is that the same as a Bible Bump? Where you would hit the bump with the family Bible (because it was the biggest book in the house) and it would go away?

It might be like Whack-A-Mole (or Whack-A-Cycst), check somewhere else on your body for it.

A buddy of mine another knifemaker at the time. Went to his doctor during the exam the doc found what appeared to be a 1/4" spot of skin cancer on my friends forearm. They sent him to a specialist and confirmed it was cancer. Doc tells him it has to come off. Friend asks how much? Doc tell him almost $2000.00. Now full time knifemakers don't make much money and few if any have any sort of health care insurance unless the wife works and they are covered as a spouse.

So my buddy comes home looks at the little spot and gets to thinking (sometimes not a good idea when your use to figuring out all sorts of solutions for problems on your own like a knifemaker does) And he figures it can't be to hard to remove something that small.

So he takes a small chunk of dry ice (used for the sub zero quench during the heat treatment of some stainless tool steels like we made knifes out of) and he touches it to the spot. He manages to hold it there until the area around the spot has gone quite numb. He then takes a new sterile #11 Xacto blade and cuts a nice cone shaped piece about 3/8" deep out of his arm. His wife then throws 3-4 stitches across the opening to close it up and he wipes a little super glue on it to seal the cut.

The next day he goes back to the Doc. Little chunk of arm in a baggie with some Ice. The Doc looks him over shakes his head and tell him he took a wee bit more then he needed to. But he sure got all the cancer out.

Years later he still hasn't had any problems with that site on his arm. Said it took a couple weeks to fill in. And it was stiff and hurt pretty good for a few days (same thing the doc said would be the results of him cutting it out)

So its do what ya gotta do sometimes that works.

This happened to me about 5 years ago. I went to the doc,and the nurse was amused at the bump moving back and forth as i moved my middle finger back and forth, in and out... doc came in and said, it's just a cyst, hold still and i'll hit it. by the end of the day it was gone... i had Never heard or seen one of these before.
I get them at least once a year since, sometimes a couple a year, on the same hand, same spot, i just make a fist, hit the counter with the back of my hand, and in a few hours it's gone.

I'm sure yours will come back again, now you know what to do.

    Stay Safe

As I understand it, a ganglion cyst can rupture quite easily if thumped hard enough, and the fluid inside is just re-absorbed back in to the body.

Good SHTF practice for when there are no doctors readily available.
