The neighbors walked over last night and hauled me outside to look at Jupiter and Saturn. On Dec 21st there will be the closest conjunction of these planets since 1623: only .1 degree. On the 21st they will look like a single star. Some people say that this conjunction was the Star of Bethlehem that was observed by the Magi.
In any case they hauled me out last night because the Tri-Cities are supposed to be clouded over on the 21st. I am glad that they did so. The light pollution is far greater now than when I lived here as a kid but at least the rain clouds are not obscuring everything as they do in Vancouver. If you get a cloud free night between now and the 21st I suggest that you go outside and take a look.
