Interesting article:

The Case Against Civilization

Not strictly about preparing but relevant nonetheless.

Not saying that hunting gathering would work in first world countries - we have done to much damage to wildlife and their habitat and our population could not be supported by hunting/gathering alone, maybe not even a few individuals unless they are someplace north of the Canadian border.

But still interesting.

There's PLENTY of edible meat sacks around us.... but that would be canabalism. ;)

I don't hold out too much hope for humanity if the system fully collapses.

Two or three generations after the "great" depression was the last of large numbers of self-sufficient people. 80 million Baby-Boomers and mass consumption changed the world.

Proof
1. So-called preppers are maligned by main stream society.

2. Far too many consider "government" as the arbiter of humanity; social justice, moral code, etc. And, because of that, government has become the surrogate for discourse; many or most go from idle to turbo-boost if there is a difference of opinion/paradigm.

3. The requirements for insurance and taxes took away the need for community self help when things like a barn burning occur; human capitol isn't that good of an investment any more.

4. Humanity has morphed into a bunch of bleeping individuals with thin skin, high Power Distance, high Uncertainty Avoidance, high Collectivism, and low Masculinity; anyone who is not, has been maligned #1.

I stopped after just the third sentence. Science has EVERYTHING to do with technology.

Then you miss the point.

As the article goes on to point out, candidates for the most important technology "inventions" had nothing to do with scientific method, e.g., fire. No one sat down and thought about experimenting to get fire - they got some fire from a lightning strike, and later, by mistake, dropped some meat into the fire and discovered that burnt mammal flesh tasted good. We owe where we are today to that chance discovery by some pre-human.
