I just got done reading another story like this. How in the world are these people this stupid? What happened to "know your target and whats beyond it"?

Yar.

Interestingly I "think" it's gotten quite a bit safer. Hunter education requirements etc for tags.

I do not recall the exact statistics, but I "think" Maine at one time had 5 annual negligent hunter fatalities...

New York is all ya gotta know about this headline.....:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Bad hunter was from Ohio  guess theres no ban on interstate stupidity.

The article is obvious in their lack of knowledge or care about hunting or guns. A tidbit from the article.

Marvin C. Miller, 26, was hunting deer on state land late Friday when he fired his 7mm high-powered scoped rifle at a brown pick-up truck, according to the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office.

The bullet hit the truck's front fender and shot through its engine compartment.

The truck was disabled — but neither its driver, Robert Merritt, nor the other passenger was harmed.

Upshot to this story - we learned a 7mm will kill a truck. Who needs a .50 to stop the hordes now? :D

Maybe Mr. Miller is racist and lives by the mantra "if its brown gun it down" and thats what triggered him.

Nah, pretty sure he's just an idiot.

Sooo....shooting at moving brown truck "thinking" it was a deer....

I have deer hunted for quite the long while now...And have seen and heard things that look and sound like a deer , that tuned out to be something else...Also I understand that when you are super focused on something and looking for it... everything can look and sound like what it is you are looking for....

That said , what the Hell happened to "Know your target and what's behind it "...Not to forget to mention shooting at something on the road....

Just "No"...Not a good example for hunters...yet this will be how we are all thought of...
Andy

I know what confused him.... the truck probably honked its horn and anything with horns is obviously a buck deer

What was that line from Forrest Gump? "Stuipd is as stupid does"

I read the first paragraph & that was enough for me, it happened in NEW YORK. just sayin.

Yaknnow I was thinking of getting those fuzzy reindeer horns and rudolph nose for my truck, but I don't want to get shot so...

And yeah @Caveman Jim, New York sucks - still wondering why Ohio guy had to go there to hunt pickups - Ohio has to be full of trucks and the land is much flatter. :D

I travel down to the K-Falls area every-so-often for work. I've asked my friend who lives there about the "squeaks" and rock-chucks. I've been told that if anyone wants to shoot them, all you have to do is get the land owners permission. They welcome people getting rid of the varmints for them.

Be prepared for the farmer with grill you with questions! First thing they ask is "DO YOU KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SPRINKLER HEAD, COW AND A ROCK-CHUCK???"

My friend has told me that people pay big money to be "escorted" around so they can shoot the varmints in the area. Usually people from big cities, East coast, etc, who've never shot a gun or seen country critters.

My friend told me the farmer that lives next to him gave his permission to a guy down there who has been doing these "tour guided" trips for a few years. One bunch of people shot up the sprinkler heads and even shot 2 of his cows. The "hunters" didn't realize what they were so they shot them. As they started shooting at things closer and closer to the farmers house, the farmer ran out with his shotgun and started shooting back at them. They DROPPED the guns and scattered.

The farmer doesn't allow "guided tours" on his property anymore. Only friends and neighbors.

So, long story short, for this happening in NY, yeah I believe it. Shoot at anything that moves (or doesn't move) and claim ignorance.

What a bunch of sorry idiots. People that mistake sprinkler heads, trucks, housewives hanging up laundry, domesticated cattle & pigs, sheep, dogs or anything else that is not the animal they are hunting should have the book thrown t them. I would give a pass for the 14-15 years old girl who shot an elk thinking it was a deer when not even the state game people would believe it at first because they said there are no elk in this area. Extra points for actually alerting the authorities who at first said it isn't so. We need more people in government like her and her father, not the mindless idiots we get.
