I spent much of today running a family member around from clinic to clinic, trying to get some medical help for that person.

It wasn't life threatening, but it was painful, and debilitating. We were lucky in that we were able to find a specialist that was able to fix the problem and who was able to take in the family member on extremely short notice. This doctor had to stay an extra 30 minutes past the time the clinic closed, but got it done and prevented our XMas from being ruined by a family member suffering pain thru to the weekend. Also, had the situation gone on longer, more harm would have been done, possibly to the point of permanent, even disabling harm.

We are not sure how the injury happened, but suffice it to say that we all need to be careful and wear protective gear even when doing seemingly simple tasks. Something as simple as a speck in the eye can take a person out of commission and cause them a LOT of pain - that probably won't go away any time soon until the cause is removed.

If this had been SHTF we probably would still be dealing with the situation.

I've lacerated each of my corneas. Worst pain ever.

Now I just gouge my eyes out like sections of grapefruit with a teaspoon while reading "news" articles online.

Small things like a stick in the eye or a dental abscess can be much more of an issue if left untreated than many, more traumatic injuries.

I won't lie, losing your first 10mm and getting a piece of metal in your eye, are almost right of passage.

Glad everything turned out okay!

Merry Christmas!

If you get a small piece of ferrous metal (dust, particale, etc.) on your eye and you don't get it removed or rinsed out, it'll rust and cause even more pain and/or complications....

Glad to here you got them taken care of!

Very good that all turned out as well as expected. This year, in addition to everything else, I had cataract surgery. Both eyes, one month apart. New engineered lenses installed. Wrong one put in right eye. Doc went back in, rooted it out and replaced it with the correct one. Few months later, the left retina tore. More surgery and drops to prevent pressure from causing vision loss via deterioration of my optical nerves. We are indeed fragile creatures.

FYI - they tried first aid at home - they had eye wash - didn't work. Then urgent care the next morning - who didn't have the equipment. Then an optometrist who wasn't in. Then the Hillsboro Eye Clinic which is where my ophthalmologist is, managed to get us in at the last minute.

Our next stop would have been the ER, but they may or may not have a specialist on duty and may or may not have the equipment needed.

Patient is recovering.

My Christmas eve went south very quickly. After an emergency ultra sound, they discovered blood clots in my left lower leg that I'd been having trouble with. Then I went home, but was having so much pain in my side that I was compelled to go back to the hospital. They did an MRI of my lungs and found blood clots in there as well (likely from the left leg). So now I'm on blood thinners for at least 6 months, maybe longer, maybe for life.

Just imagine if we had an earthquake and no one, including doctors/nurses/etc., could get to the hospitals/etc.

How many people would be in a world of hurt just from non-earthquake related injuries and illness.

How many people since March have had health problems or died because of non-CV-19 issues but could not get health care due to restrictions. This is just a non-dress rehearsal.

Be careful out there. If SHTF, you are probably more likely to be in a world of hurt due to getting a cold, or a splinter in your finger, than being attacked by zombies.
