Several different clubs in the area conduct matches that qualify you to purchase
a M-1 from the CMP. You can join the Oregon State Association, $25 to satisfy the
requirement of belonging to an affiliated club.
The 'Special' grade is basically a brand new rifle. Well worth the money.

DRRC will loan you a M-1 rifle, shooting mat, and spotting scope. Plus sell you M-1 ammo cheap
    to shoot in their match.

A CHL also counts as marksman training. If you can't join a local affiliated shooting range, you can always join the GCA, a national club for $25 that comes with a magazine sometimes.

Or you can just buy one from D & D sports of Lebanon as they got some in for sale.

I really wanna recreate that scene from Gran Torino out on my lawn. :D

joining the GCA is the easiest way to satisfy the club requirement. CPL/CHL satisfies the training requirement.

plus with the GCA membership you get a nice magazine :)

the cmp special grade are fantastic rifles if you want one guaranteed to shoot well. brand new stock and brand new match grade barrel. it's also one of the cheapest ways to get a semiauto 30-06.

Is there something special about the 30.06 ammo you use in the Garand? I don't see specific references but i get the impression they're either fussy, or really not fussy about the quality?

I did not read that the CHL would suffice as the training stuff, does anyone know for certain that this is the case? As i saw the listing, it looked like only CHL training-like levels are enough.

I'm seriously wanting to get an M1, though right now the stupid US Citizen stuff (along with the training part) kicks me in the nuts :( I really don't know much about the M1 and/or what i should be looking for.

From what i can tell, i need one with a muzzle erosion of +2 ? which means the service grade has more than 50% chance of being higher (less desirable) So it would then seem to be another $300-$400 for the CMP rebuild. I'm not looking for a period version, but would happily take one if everything is mechanically sound.

D & D sports still has a couple CMP Grand s but has no more coming. It takes months to get them by ordering so here is a good chance to buy now.

    D&D Sports?
Yeah, looks like 1-3 months from CMP right now, but i'm in no hurry, i just to have one before they all disappear and/or sell for the gunbroker prices, which are starting to get crazy.

Muzzle erosion is more important for accuracy than throat. A reading of 2 or
less on the muzzle would be preferable for accuracy. You must be careful
what you feed your M-1 so as not to exceed the gas port pressure. You can find many articles on this subject. One solution is the ported gas plug. Reloaded
ammo using the correct burn rate powder is what I do. IMR 4064 or IMR
    4895 works well.

Here's the ported gas plug link, i noticed there are vented plugs, which are adjustable and need adjusting, and the ported option, no adjustment needed and for a little more money, seems to be the best option.
