Seems to me, based upon the reason to not give the raise, raises a thorneympoint. With legislatures across the country proposing and passing legislation that flies in the face of the states constitution as well as US Constitution, it'll only get worse.

Perhaps these legislatures should cease passing constitution violating legislation.

I see a simple solution here. The sheriffs ought to fulfill their Constitutional duties and arrest the lot of them... failure to uphold oath of office at the minimum... maybe RICO violations...

Barring that...

Federal should just threaten to withhold all Federal funding from "Sanctuary States" and pull out their Federal assets and workers or furlough them, or give them vacations  See how these States like losing their Federal pork. :s0136:

Well, great.

They are alienating a giant piece of their traditional base.

Gun laws are aimed at Peaceable citizens, not Criminals. Look at all the exceptions built in to keep criminals from getting in trouble with gun laws.

Illegal Aliens can't be arrested for trying to purchase a firearm.

Gang membership can't be used for Red Flag purposes.

Seeing as how the D.O.J. is the defacto law enforcement agency in charge of ALL state and Fed. law and law enforcement officers nation wide!
That's a common misconception, one that federal agencies do very little to dispell.

DOJ is only a shot-caller for federal law enforcement. States are controlled by their constitutions with county sheriffs having the most authority, but only within their county boundries.

Feds can investigate systematic or egregious violations of civil rights by state and local departments, but oversight or "in charge" of other smaller LE agencies? Nope.

Feds also have the largest jurisdiction, by geography and population, operating in all 50 states + territories, but can (and have) been rebuffed by local (state and county) agencies who can constitutionally (10A) refuse them permission to operate and deny them authority within their borders. That rarely happens as state and federal agencies generally prefer to work together.

If you consider the lowlifes that frequent the legislatures, this will be no surprise.

However, it does not look like a very smart move. Anyway, most cops are probably saying to themselves, "A pension threat is one thing; but getting my bubblegum shot by irate neighbors for trying to grab their guns, is something else again."
