In the same vein I also wonder how we've been served by being a consumer economy. In the 50's the average house was 800 square feet and no garage now the average is 2,200 square feet and a two car garage. You were doing well to have a TV now we cry and moan if we don't have 2-3 TVs.
I'll never put down the working class, I will however wonder how working a 40 hour work week ensures anyone the best of all luxuries.
Exactly. We as a nation have had it so good for so long many have no clue how good we have it. It's why if this free money ever dries up it will be a sight to see. A LOT of people who have never worked for anything will feel free to take anything from anyone. They have been told all their life they are owed everything they want.

Amazon pay rates range from more than 10 a hour to over 28 a hour  thats a fair bit more than the $7.25/hr Federal minimum wage.

Its the hours worked per week that's messed up I'd say.

Remember when many companies noted that several employees chose to cut their own hours in order to stay below a specific income level to keep benefits??
Not to mention people LOVE to bad mouth Amazon, Wally and such. Those poor workers there. No one put a gun to those poor workers heads. Those poor workers can learn a trade if they wish. Some should pay more attention to Mike Rowe. There are jobs begging for workers in very well paying trades. Or you can go to work asking people if they want fries with that and scream and cry that the guy who owns the place has a nice car and you don't so he should pay you $30 an hour.

Consumerism is 20th Century slavery, brah. Where you been? When consumerism goes off the rails, poof...hoarding. It's like a " gotta keep and accumulate more stuff" short circuit

NY Man Charged with Hoarding and Cough Assault by FBI

This should be not fake news enough for you. They are charging him for hoarding essential supplies, lying the the govt and coughing on the FBI

Lesson: it's better to assault the FBI than tell a lie:

The assault charge carries a maximum penalty of one year in prison and a $100,000 fine, while the false statements charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

i hire trades workers. the demand is there but the pipeline is not. Many places do not hire apprentices and cannot fill journeymen at $50/hr because California is paying people $300k a year with ot.

you can't just miricle a journeyman the same a you can miracle a special ops guy. They have to be made over time with a lot of resources.

not saying every worker is fantastic but it's like someone can walk into a job paying $30+ hour with no skills and experience.

And that doesn't even get into the unions who much like the AMA, limit the amount of professionals in their career to keep wages high and stifle competition.

got 2 cousins . One is a non union electrician apprentice making $16.5 hr. Other is a union elevator mechanic apprentice making $40/hr. Both have same time on job. Which job took a 3 year waitlist and being married to the daughter of the union pres and which would take any warm body.

I can hire every electrician in my AO who can pass a piss test and they will make $150k+ per year....they just don't exist. Ask me how I know.

there are so few apprentice programs compared to the demand for workers it's not even funny. Why would the IBEW devalue their profession? If it's so easy to go get a trade job why doesn't even on who wants to actually work do it?

... However much you yap about capitalism or it being legit to price at "what the market will bear", or whether there are laws against the specific thing or not, somebody will put a stop to it -- or to him--a long time before they watch their children die of thirst. ...

An important point. We can have long academic discussions about the free-market or capitalism but in the end, all economic systems require the willing participation of the collective populace. Going far enough into "unconscionable" territory will cause that willing participation to dissipat and the system must be enforced with authoritarian controls. Go far enough past that and heads roll. For capitalism to survive, a little enlightened self-interest is required.

I have twice gone back to college for trade enhancement. I am not anything special. Only difference between me and others is I wanted to do better. Everything else is just excuses which like a certain body part, we all have one. Before we decided to turn off the economy we had the kind of job prospects many had never seen in their lifetime. Now some chose to learn a skill or trade that has no work. So again they trot out excuse books. Then blame Wally, or Amazon. It's all personal choice. Chose to remain where there is not work, or refuse to learn anything, then cry and hold the hand out. Other option look at the job market, choose work that does have needs and learn something. Making excuses and holding out the hand seems easier for many. <shrug>

Its not like someone can just wake up one day and decide to be a Coder, Plumber, Electrician or Accountant. They all take years of college, trade school and/or apprenticeships.

No one could have a predicted a resurgence of certain industries and destruction of other 4-5 years ago (which is coincidentally the lead time to become an entry level worker in all of these professions.

You could enter a certain trade and in 4-5 years the industry is dead and no one is hiring. Ask all the people who work in O&G how that works out. No one expected Trump to actually be able to get some of his policies in place and now there is a shortage of machinists and programmers because we are seeing a resurgence of domestic manufacturing. I was taking machining classes at night to eat up the last of my GI bill (already have my BS) and those guys going threw the program were making like 14-16/hr as a machinist. Which is absolutely insane when you factor in the aptitude, skills and intelligence required. I can think of 500 jobs that pay better, the work is easier and and you don't have to work around chemicals that will kill you one day.

If you would have read what I wrote, there are just not the availability of apprenticeships and opportunities for certain industries. If they can get into one, its usually piecemeal work or long periods of being laid off till the next job.

In my industry the work is steady with tons of OT and great pay for trades, but we cannot have apprentices, Only journeymen. Journeymen who can pass a piss test, pass a background check, must have a CDL and don't show up drunk to work. That there cuts about 75% of the pool. And EVERYONE is fighting for that last 25%. There just aren't enough qualified bodies and the unions and schools refuse to create more to meet demand.

For the last 50 years the same idiot liberal/socialists/educators have told everyone to go to college. Why do you think that is?
