Feds handing out medical supplies taken from hoarders

I get that these folks had to come to the attention of law enforcement - ie by advertising on Craigs List or wherever.

But when does your Preparedness supply become Hoarding?
Or why?

if you offer to buy or trade?

How many items do you have to have to be a hoarder? Example 1000 masks sounds like a lot, but it might just be 1 case.

Hmm great question & an interesting topic for sure.

In my mind it would involve buying up anything as deemed essential, AFTER it is deemed such, AND doing so for profiteering. Not for personal use.

Anything stocked up before "deemed essential", for any reason, not hoarding / profiteering. IMO.

While I totally agree with CF, profteering essential items in a massive emergency situation, under what law does confiscation allow the government to...confiscate?

Another great question! Likely State level laws, once a Governor has enacted a state of emergency (or some such).

No true idea, honestly. Just tossing it out there is all.

I do know that in the aftermath of Katrina, there is now federal law which prohibits the taking of firearms ESPECIALLY AMIDST A DISASTER as in the door to door actions which occurred then.

And some still try it

As for the question... when one room looks more like this

I do not believe in the concept of hoarding or price gouging , they are antithetical to the idea of a free market. Supply and demand actually do work when they are allowed to . It is a shame in my mind that we have become so imbued to the idea of socialism that we as a society endorse the idea that people should have their property seized by the government. To redistribute to others who did not pay for that property

ETA: People as a matter of course just used to store food and essentials because it was the right thing to do , every family knew how to raise, store and preserve food. Many of these shortages and "emergencies" happen because people have become overly reliant on the Just In Time supply system which is based on anticipation of need .

On the other hand, the mental conditions that allows/trigger people to save everything and never throw anything out; can be quite serious... especially when it comes to garbage/packaging.

My mother; she has some signs of "hoarding" but its only paperwork and holiday decor... however she keeps her house clean and organized.

My Mother-in-law consider my military collection to be a "sign of hoarding":s0002: But... I dont just go and buy every military item I come across. I have a focus in what I collect, and I do sell some off .

Do we have a ( Not Fake) News or other credible source to work with here as per the O.P. or is this just a Hypothetical Situation?
I'm curious if this is actually happening and who the LEO are, and under what authority they are operating under! ;)

The people who raised me were products of the depression and I agree with you to a large degree. People who have some psychological trauma tend to hoard garbage and junk. My grandfather kept everything because he could envision a future use ( better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it) . However you'd be the same way I imagine if you spent a winter living on black eye peas and hot water corn bread because all the other crops failed , then the government came along and shot all your cattle then burned the carcasses to combat a bangs disease out break . It will color your views in ways that others can't understand.

There is a difference between being properly prepared and just accumulating junk. My grand parents were definitely a mix of both. It had an opposite effect on me to the point I hate clutter and junk, but I still stay prepared for emergencies and store the essentials to keep life somewhat normal.

What we have today in most of society is a total lack of any future use or plans for a rainy day by 95% of Americans.

NY Man Charged with Hoarding and Cough Assault by FBI

This should be not fake news enough for you. They are charging him for hoarding essential supplies, lying the the govt and coughing on the FBI

OK, Now that I have the context, were good!

Yea, don't do that, and don't expect to have folks not pissed off at you when you get caught doing that!

THAT is almost as bad as those who steal these things, then turn around an sell them back at a YUGE profit, usually to the people they were stolen from!

Socialism version.

You have two, only need one.

Capitalism version.

Store has 1000s. Charges you for what you want.

Current capitalism/socialism hybrid model.

Stores can have 1000s and government pays them for amount they need from them. If you have purchased more than you need, you are not allowed to do so anymore. Government takes them and doesn't pay you like they do the store, which is allowed to hoard still.

Not the greatest explanation, but I think it sums it up in my head.

That may seem valid now, but in a real SHTF situation, I am inclined to think that if someone knows you have a supply that many might consider to be "excessive", then the gov may decide to come in and take your supplies.

E.G., you have enough food for a year and the gov thinks you only need enough for two weeks.

Certainly many preppers have more than two weeks of food.

This is where it is best not to advertise, anywhere (word of mouth or online), what you have stocked up. You may think it is safe to tell some 'trusted' people, but when it comes down to it, they will rat you out if they think it is to their advantage - such as, if they need to feed their kids.

Cough assault?

My wife would be arrested over and over as she (and has for many years, a congenitally caused problem) out of the blue starts coughing violently about every other day.

Sometimes it scares me that she might die from it.

So, I guess I ought to turn her in for 'cough assault'.

Man, I really loath these terms like 'social distancing' and now 'cough assault'.

Metro sexuals lovingly embrace them though...

FWIW

1000 masks doesn't sound outrageous.

it's less then a years supply for a family of 3

I have one small box (less then 25 masks) but I'm leaving them for the wife and kid and just keep my distance at stores and pray.

Perspective, I suppose. Yesterday ago, I would have thought having the supplies I have was excessive, but that was when I was moving a lot and didn't want to move a lot of things. Now that I own property, my supply has increased tenfold or more but I feel like it's barely enough.
