What if we are already in "hyperinflation" compared to the 1920s before the contraction of the dollar supply?
It will get a lot worse. So far we have about a 1.3+ trillion dollar deficit for this year. Trillion dollar plus deficits are here to stay until the whole thing goes bust. Nobody knows when that will happen, it will just happen.

Hyperinflation is when that loaf of bread costs $100 in the morning and $1k that night. Because of budget mismanagement by our governments and the soaring personal debt of consumers, I can see the USA headed for this kind of a scenario of hyperinflation. Just look at the cost of goods over the past 42 months. It's out of control.

Why is this a question?

Without a currency youd have to go back to barter/trade or precious metals (which is like a currency but I digress).

Want to buy a car, how many cows do you have, kinda thing.

It's easy, just be an unusually attractive woman in Texas oil country.
Will she work ........ ;)

Some things have stayed relatively stable. looking at family food spending; a few things have gone up yes, others have stayed stable, and a small number of things have gone down, temporarily.

If we were to travel back to say, the 1930s and told the Great Depression people that in the future, there would be trillions of dollars traded daily, that the budget deficient is in trillions of dollars, that housing costs are in hundreds of thousands, and yet the economy is ""healthy"" according to the government.... what would their reaction be?

Unless this is a scenario of a book , movie or TV show...Or as noted above a self isolated community ....
Ain't going to work....Not in the real world , at least of any length of time.

At one time when I was out of regular work....
I took on a lot of under the table jobs. and got paid with food , goods and cash.
It was a band-aid fix at best...but...it did put food on the table...and helped with a house payment.

Imagine paying your monthly rent or mortgage in cows, garden veggies, maybe a few craft items you built by hand....

Buy a TV and find it doesnt work, take it back and ask for your 50 goats back...
Then they say you didnt buy the protection program for 29 chickens so you have to take it up with the mfg warranty direct. Shipping will cost you 2 pounds of tomatoes.

Life would be way more fun anyways...

Living without money:

I once worked at a very remote resort that was a worker-owned coop. The staff lived on the property and had free housing and utilities and cheap or free food. One guy owned no car and got all his clothes from the giveaway. He once went a year without cashing his paycheck.

In the late 70's or early 80's there was a company called Barter Systems. They connected plumbers with homeowners etc... farmers with grocers... they took a small percent of every trade and paid the tax [ and themselves]. They issued script so that those that needed a plumber did not need to find one who also needed what they sold.
You could buy barter script with cash, but it had no cash value. It fell apart when service providers started wanting double the amount on barter script over cash. When cash got you a 50% discount over Barter who would use it? DR

Imagine how much storage space we would need for stuff like this if we went back to a barter system....
Already the oven and dishwasher are not an oven and dishwasher, can't do it! :s0112:

Hyperinflation. Now that is the one thing I've always seen as an eventual certainty, but the money changers are so clever and corrupt, who knows? If it ever happened here, PMs would then be amazing. In Zimbabwe after they ran white farmers off their lands and destroyed that core industry, it triggered hyperinflation. Very nice homes were being sold for one or two gold coins. We are doing the same right now.
