is it legal to take my 12 g to a gunsmith to have him shorten the barrel from 28" to a more 'tactical' length, more appropriate for a home defense setup?
any input or referrals would be appreciated :)

Hmmm.....one would think so as long as the barrel was at least 18.5"
Your gunsmith will most likely know the answer to your question.

I agree with Fast Eddie, local gunsmith will know the min length allowed for barrel and overall length. My Maverick 88 has a 18.5" barrel on it.

Wash is 18.5 on the barrel and 29 total length minimum. Not sure about PDX.

What make/model shotgun are you talking about.
It might be cheaper to buy an 18.5" replacement barrel and swap it out.

Something like a Mossberg 500 with interchangable barrels. 18.5" and 28".

    HI Meowskiz
What Shotgun do you have now? Maybe fine a Barrel for it and just change it out. Made sure the Spings are all good and the Firing Pin, Carrier, Extractor, Etc are all working right. If you need some help PM me and I can call you on the Phone.

Definitely replace the mag spring with a Wolff... I do so every few years on my always loaded bedside Mossy 500. The factory spring is not all that

I don't do those for now. I've only had 2 requests for that in the past year and that doesn't justify the almost $400 for the reamer and tap, per gauge and per choke type.
