    does anyone know how to track the history of a firearm by its serial numbers.any help woulb greatly appreciated.

    History of the firearm or history of the previous owners? the word "track" is throwing me off. If it is owners you have no access to that info, by law neither does the government but it is obvious that that isn't the case.

    Probably not much you can do. Winchester, Colt, S&W (and maybe some
    others) can provide a "factory letter" that will tell you when it left the factory, who it was sent to, and the original configuration. If it has ever
    been back to the factory for repair or refinishing they will know also.

    Beyond that, good luck. Sometimes a record will exist with law enforcement
    or unrelated personal chronicles, but there is no big data-base that
    has all guns listed and their history.

    sorry guys i should have been more desciptive.i want to get production date an things like that not previous owners or anything like that.

    Well heck--just post the sn here. use xx for the last couple of digits.
    Be sure to include the manufacturer, model number etc., and any letters
    before or after the numbers in the sn.

    If a "dates of manufacture" list exists, someone will be along shortly
    and give you the information.

    If you're more ambitious, start doing some searching on the internet. For many firearms, you can find a window of manufacture based on the serial number depending on how often the manufacturer updated the model.
