I've known someone had a garage sale twenty year ago and sold five guns to one person. A couple week later, police came knocking on the seller's door and showed him pictures of the firearms in questions. It's was involved in a drug raid and found a cache of guns ( about a dozen). The seller ended up being a witness to the case. The seller didn't do anything wrong. Back then, it was legal to sell without background checks between private sales in Oregon.
Federal laws allows private sales without background check, checking identification, record keeping and etc.
Today, in Oregon since Aug 2015, the seller would unlawfully transfering firearms without doing a background check. He would probably ended up serving time in prison, lost his gun rights, pay huge fines, have all his guns taken away, his life ruined.
