Be sure to use the right gauge, 8mm has an "early" and a "late" measure. Headspace is a huge issue when reloading--case head separation will put your firearm out of action (recently lost out in a 1917 machine gun contest because of a separation we could not remove). " Blowing up" is rarely the issue with headspace, but blow-back, splits, separations sure can be....
Besides, "old" isn't the issue--condition IS the issue. I regularly shoot a Swedish Mauser dated 1898 with hand loads, Czech VZ's from the 1930's, and a variety of Mauser 1898 actions, with no issues. SOME believe "older is better"
