As a current resident of our beautiful 50th state I cannot help but wish I had a dollar for every time I had to correct someone's "guess" about our current restrictions that deal with high capacity RIFLE mags.
Here's the law as worded

Last updated October 28, 2019.
Hawaii prohibits "[t]he manufacture, possession, sale, barter, trade, gift, transfer, or acquisition of detachable ammunition magazines with a capacity in excess of ten rounds which are designed for or capable of use with a pistol."1

It says pistol but almost 100% of the time when I deal with people from outside my state they are insisting that it also covers rifles which is incorrect.

So if your kind enough to read this far, please help me re-inform others and say " hey want to hear an interesting but irrelevant point- Hawaii doesn't have a high cap law on rifle mags.

Although for 40 plus years and the current Democratic administration is trying hard to change this law.
thank you stay healthy and safe my friends

What about mags for this pistol.

AR15 Pistol Kit | wolfpack-armory

I was living in Hawaii when the "Assault Pistol" legislation was passed.

Note: "capable of use with a pistol".

Even back then......Rrrrright.....ever heard of the Bushmaster Pistol? Well, it used an AR 15 magazine. It does NOT matter......if you own or don't own a Bushmaster Pistol. So...... if you had possession of an AR-15 magazine that wasn't blocked. Are you in violation?

On the GOOD SIDE......
I never heard of a prosecution for possession of a 20 rd or 30 rd AR15 magazine just in and of itself. BUT....the law is there. And thus, you don't see many internet sellers willing to ship to Hawaii.

Of course........it's all subject to some DA's mood....or that he/she might just want to make some political points.

OMG.....
Remember, when the Prosecutor went after the "porn theaters"? Rrrright...... and there was no internet back then. The ticket sellers, IIRC....got found GUILTY. I don't recall if the film makers etc... or theater owners were ever a part of the prosecutions. LOL....what a sad day that was. Don't ask what movie it was. I don't recall.

Anyway.....it was just another reason to flee Hawaii. LOL, I took my magazines (firearms magazines) with me. Don't you just feel so SAFE?

Aloha, Mark

did you find a rifle loophole, or if the rifle mag fits in a pistol is it still prohibited even though it also fits a rifle?

Personally, I think the pistol limit is more egregious than the rifle if I was forced to choose.

Sooooo, .........
a side note our current DA Keith Kaneshiro is under federal investigation, our former Chief of Police Louie KeAloha and his wife Kathrine KeAloha who was an prosecutor working in the District Attorneys office as a prosecutor are in jail on many different federal charges, the wife Katherine KeAloha has charges of drug trafficking with her brother who was a pain management doctor.
Numerous city officials have gotten letters from the FBI, several former Police officers were awaiting sentencing before the whole Covid 19 virus happened. The officers were charged with multiple federal counts which were directly related to the Chief of Police and his City & County Prosecutors wife.
Do you want to know more???? ( In the voice from Starship Troopers).....

LOL.....I use to always say.....

"20 years (or was it *30-40 years?) of Liberal Democratic rule and look what we got."

Course, I left in 2003. I tried to warned people.

*Just think since, Gov. John Burns.

Aloha, Mark

PS....but IIRC, Eileen Anderson did have a single term that broke the run of Democrats for awhile.

I remember following a pickup with a bed full of marijuana plants down the main road through Kekaha on Kauai in 1989. They passed a cop car and they just waved at each other. Or rather, gave the howzit' sign.

Lived there for two years and found out what it was like to be the victim of racism. Everything from refusal to be waited on in stores, to gangs of locals trying to whup me because I was a Haole.

Hated that place and vowed never to return. But it was eye-opening to at least get a glimpse of what minorities go through in racist areas.

Another fond memory was when I was dating one of four white women on the island and I rented a cabin up at Waimea canyon. I borrowed a Winchester .30-30 from a buddy since I didn't have any guns with me. The girl was a bit of a liberal from Seattle and was bothered that I brought a gun. I told her I don't camp without a gun. We settled in and decided to go for a hike. I brought the rifle. About a half-mile in the middle of the jungle, we met three sketchy-looking locals all slinging AKs. We sized each other up and just nodded as we passed. A little bit later, the girl asked me if the rifle was loaded. Yep. Good, was her response.

My guess was that they were coming back from their grow. In any case, it made my girlfriend think twice about the usefulness and necessity of firearms.

Are you closely following the Young vs Hawaii case? If so do have any news you could share about the latest status of the case?

Young will be dead before the case finishes. I think he is 71 now.

You know how the supreme court said tazers were legal? Still illegal here. Even tried to get a bill passed making them legal again and the legislature shot it down again this year. It wont matter here if Young even lives long enough to win, Hawaii will just ignore the court's decision. Unless the president wants to invoke the insurrection act and show up with the military to make Hawaii follow the supreme court decisions.

Someone just got arrested in Oahu for carrying a few rounds on ammunition on their person (illegal to open or conceal carry just ammo here). Honolulu is basically Portland trying to make decisions for the rest of the state. But in my area they cant even pay the police well enough (I know of one officer who is squatting with his family in the abandoned coast guard base)

State legislature thinks the supreme court is just suggestions, Hawaiians think the state legislature is just suggestions, nothing changes, we eat some pork. but if you know where to go you can hear the fully automatic weapons fire as the locals have some fun ignoring the suggestions.

I grew up there. We used to hunt Molokai Ranch a lot during bird season. There really wasn't a lot of gun owners but a few pig hunters here and there. Haven't been there since late 80's but I won't back and visit for the gun culture.

Appreciate the info, even @tac has to correct us about the UK firearm laws. Some of us listen and some can't bother to be corrected.

If there is a pistol variant, then technically the magazine needs to be capped at 10 rounds. That's why shops in Oahu don't sell 30 round AR & AK mags to non-leo.
Example, they'd throw the book at you if you had a 33rd Glock mag and said it was for your sub2000.
If you're in possession of the mag, it's a misdemeanor. If it's in a gun, it's a felony. But I'm no lawyer.
