Only been here 3 years so my pidgin is terrible. Weird that I know more tagalog than Hawaiian. And why does a tiny nation like the Philippines have 9 different languages? One of my clinics they patients mostly speak tagalog, and the other it is mostly ilocano.

At least we get 3 different varieties of pancit :), sooo good. Here is the random potluck lunch we had at the office recently. Not even for a special occasion, just for fun. And this was food for about 10 people.

Gained any weight ? That spread looks amazing. Thanks for keeping us entertained. How bought some good tagalog phrases ?

I was living in Hawaii when the "Assault Pistol" legislation was passed.

Note: "capable of use with a pistol".

Even back then......Rrrrright.....ever heard of the Bushmaster Pistol? Well, it used an AR 15 magazine. It does NOT matter......if you own or don't own a Bushmaster Pistol. So...... if you had possession of an AR-15 magazine that wasn't blocked. Are you in violation?

On the GOOD SIDE......
I never heard of a prosecution for possession of a 20 rd or 30 rd AR15 magazine just in and of itself. BUT....the law is there. And thus, you don't see many internet sellers willing to ship to Hawaii.

Of course........it's all subject to some DA's mood....or that he/she might just want to make some political points.

OMG.....
Remember, when the Prosecutor went after the "porn theaters"? Rrrright...... and there was no internet back then. The ticket sellers, IIRC....got found GUILTY. I don't recall if the film makers etc... or theater owners were ever a part of the prosecutions. LOL....what a sad day that was. Don't ask what movie it was. I don't recall.

Anyway.....it was just another reason to flee Hawaii. LOL, I took my magazines (firearms magazines) with me. Don't you just feel so SAFE?

Aloha, Mark
Why would some over-zealous DA care - the CIC from "Hawaii" is no longer in office

Yeah, that's a challenge here. there is a big box of cookies on that table this morning with a bunch of other snack items.

I only know a few things in Tagalog. Body parts, good morning, good afternoon. I have a cheat sheet for visits if the nurse is not available to translate.

Bolus,

I really, really enjoy reading your posts and seeing your pictures (Yummy food!) about your home.

It sounds like a wonderful community! I think that it is wonderful that all of you support one another and that IS what a community should be about!

What made you decide to move to that specific location? A new job offer? The weather or did you just really need a BIG change in your life if I may ask? NO problem if this is too personal and I do not mean to be rude.

I like the idea of your medical assistant's knives being with her in the office too. I can appreciate that as a Knife Lady! LOL

Cool sword! I have never owned one but I have looked at a few online.

I worked with a lady from HI for a few years in the 70's. I forgot what island that she was from. She was born in HI. She married a Marine from the state that I moved to with my late husband. (Nam era. My late husband (USN) and the man were Vietnam Veterans.)

She hated the cold and snow in the Great Lakes region. Blizzard country! She told him that if he did not move back to HI with her that she would leave him. Eventually she moved BACK to HI. She accepted an office job with Pan Am or TWA. Her husband was an insurance agent and moved to HI with her.

Was it a difficult move for you to move from the PNW to your specific island?

How did it go when you moved your firearms? Did you take them or most of them with you?

Did you sell your guns and ammunition HERE and buy new firearms and ammunition in HI?

I can imagine that paying to move/ship even a small amount of ammo would be a royal pain in the butt plus EXPENSIVE so it would be CHEAPER for you just to buy new ammo there? Sell your ammo in the PNW?

Thank you and I do appreciate your input to the forum. Take care!

3 years ago I was complete burned out on corporate medicine. I hated working for a "non-profit" so focused on profits. It was killing me.

I took a chance and moved to a very rural area in Hawaii. Took a huge pay cut and loss of benefits to do it, just to try and connect back with taking care of patients in a under-served area.

The firearm laws here are beyond stupid so I gave my 41 firearms and ~500 mags and probably 50K in ammo to my stepson as an early inheritance before moving here. I glad I did because people who follow the firearm laws here tend to be punished for doing so. Ammo is crazy expensive because of 9/11 it is now considered an explosive so cant ship here by plane so basically it is near impossible to order ammo here over the internet.

I dont believe in registration or giving the police access to my medical records so I'd never purchase a firearm here. They also charge you to be finger printed to be registered in the FBI RAPBAK database if you own firearms and I dont believe in that either (turns out though the state charged for this but never got around to registering anyone with the FBI and just pocketed that extra money - corruption begets corruption). I do have my tools with me though so its like not I could not be armed in about 40 minutes if I needed to.

The community is great and taking care of each other in spite of the 50% unemployment that covid caused. We have almost zero covid here and there was a tiny protest 3 hours away for BLM but no looting or rioting. People call people "aunty" and "uncle" here even if they are not family because the Hawaiian culture is even if you are not related the community is all treated as family.

Then I fight the system by doing the mental health clearances so people can get firearms. (If you have ever in your life seen a mental health provider the state requires you get clearance from a physician to get a firearm). Kaiser, DOD, VA, several other large medical systems do not do the firearm clearances by default so I'm one of a handful in the state who do them. Another physician who did them just retired so I think we are down to 2 or 3 in the state who do them. Just a indirect firearm ban kind of like the fact that there is no open or conceal carry here because they never give our permits for any reason. Its even illegal to carry a single round of ammo in your pocket here.

....but if you live in a rural area where the police response time is somewhere between 2 hours and never, people tend to consider the laws as suggestions and ignore them.

I miss Hawai'i badly every day but the gun laws there surely did suck. All the firearms I have now would be illegal there and as much as I would love to be back home I just can't. That and the cost of living there now is insane not to mention all the mainlanders moving in and making it a retreat for them.. its definitely lost its natural Hawai'i feel now a days too. Where do most people that came from Hawai'i end up on the mainland when the ocean is life? I'm huge into spear fishing and free diving but the waters here are just to darn cold.. so where do people that leave Hawai'i end up?

Move to South Florida.

Maybe to one of the Keys.

I lived all over South Florida as a kid including Marathon, one of the keys.

Closest thing you'll get to Hawaii.

Oh, you'll have to rub elbows with 'mainlanders' as there are few Florida 'crackers' (that's what natives call themselves - the word is not one of denigration) left.

Many of these mainlanders are from...yep, nyc, but still you'll be in the closest thing to the tropical beauty of Hawaii's.

Frankly, today, I'd rather live in South Florida than Hawaii....but prefer my native Texas.

Funny you mentioned marathon. I lived there for just shy of a year and loved it. My parents live in north Florida now and seem really happy there too.

What part texas you live in? I have a potential job and have only been a couple places in Texas but did really enjoy it.

The Assault Pistol Ban (which included the magazine restrictions) was adopted way back in the 90's before Zero became the President.

PS....the Dems still rule HI like it's a one political party state.

RE : gun collection and ammo going to Hawaii.

If you go.....you'll have to register all the guns. More info here : https://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/hrscurrent/Vol03_Ch0121-0200D/HRS0134/HRS_0134-0003.htm

As for how do you get your guns from the mainland to Hawaii (assuming that you're gonna live there). May I suggest (from an old post of mine)....

ADVICE ON SHIPPING A HOUSEHOLD WITH GUNS

When I moved from Hawaii to Washington (in 2005), I had my firearms and ammo (household goods) shipped to me, via boat. With 9-11 still in mind, there were plenty of problems. House movers flat out, REFUSED to transport, firearms and ammo.

The answer for me was a Freight Shipper. I made my own shipping crate out of 2x4s and plywood. Constructing it, to be exactly fitted and secured, on top of a standard shipping pallet. Of course, I had to "declare it" and the shipper wanted to inspect it prior to closing the box (just to make sure the firearms were, "unloaded").

PS.....check with the shipper, they may have a size and weight limit for the box that will be placed on top of the pallet.

BTW....I had a large collection. If you have a small collection....there are other ways to go about this.

Aloha, Mark

We used to lay net in Mokuleia. Hibatchi steaks and talk story all night. Sleeping in the open. It seems so long ago.

One of my fond memories was running a field trial in Lanai before they developed the island. The airport was a single paved road and a shack. It was all pineapple plantation with a two story building in town which acted as a meeting hall/hotel.

Some people with large collections are being told they can only do one firearm at a time and have to do it within 5 days of arriving. And then police told one of my friends that they dont need to ever register a completed 80% firearm because he has no serial number (absolutely wrong).

Talking to the police here is like jumping in the sewer and waiting to see what disease you get. you win.....its.... hepatitis!

There was a bill this year before covid shut it all down to re-register your firearms when you permanently left the state. You would have had to let them know where your firearm was going when you never planned to come back. The legislators love to make these federal loopholes. No federal registration? ok, we'll put you in RAPBACK ourselves and record which state your firearms will be in after you leave.

But its cool that 3 months later people still cant get an unemployment check.

The magazine restriction.

https://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/hrscurrent/Vol03_Ch0121-0200D/HRS0134/HRS_0134-0008.htm

So then, knowing HRS 134-8 is in the law.

What is an "Assault Pistol"?

Good question. By statutory definition HRS 134-1.......

"Assault pistol" means a semiautomatic pistol that accepts a detachable magazine and has two or more of the following characteristics:

(1) An ammunition magazine that attaches to the pistol outside of the pistol grip;

(2) A threaded barrel capable of accepting a barrel extender, flash suppressor, forward hand grip, or silencer;

(3) A shroud that is attached to or partially or completely encircles the barrel and permits the shooter to hold the firearm with the second hand without being burned;

(4) A manufactured weight of fifty ounces or more when the pistol is unloaded;

(5) A centerfire pistol with an overall length of twelve inches or more; or

(6) It is a semiautomatic version of an automatic firearm;

but does not include a firearm with a barrel sixteen or more inches in length, an antique pistol as defined in this section, or a curio or relic as those terms are used in 18 United States Code section 921(a)(13) or 27 Code of Federal Regulations section 478.11.

I hope that this helps.

Mark,

I do not plan on moving to HI. Parts of HI sound very nice though!

Thanks for the information about how you moved your guns from HI to WA state.

I'm a fan of the Big Island of Hawaii. Especially the upper West coast and North. Really beautiful and less touristy.
