Hey everyone,

I'm reaching out to see if anyone here has had any luck speeding up the Oregon State Police's background check process with the help of a lawyer. My background check has been delayed for reasons that are completely unknown to me, and I'm starting to wonder if there's anything I can do to get some movement on this.

If you've been through something similar and had success lighting a fire under them—whether through legal channels or otherwise—I'd really appreciate hearing about your experience.

How long of a delay? If it's been only a couple weeks then that might be just the normal "instant" background check que. If it's been over a month or so I have heard that going to Salem and walking into the State Police Headquarters and politely asking what's up there can work sometimes to at least find out what the issue is. I had an old thing where the charges were dismissed but case was never closed so I had to go back to the county courthouse to get a clerk to rubber stamp the documents and send them on to clear my name.

Several similar threads on here similar to yours in last couple years. I remember 2 of them being resolved quickly once they went to visit Salem in person fwiw. I suggest doing advanced searches on here to find those threads.

I guess calling the number that they (OSP) used to recommend be called when delayed is no longer a thing?
""Southern Oregon" sounds like it could be an awful long way from Salem?

I hired a lawyer all he was able to was confirm what I already knew that I had no felony or other disqualification. Talking to my State Rep got almost immediate results within 24 hours the issue was resolved. Course this was after a 61 day wait.

Thank you.

This.

Also ask if your FFL will call it in. If it is rejected, OSP *may* let your FFL know the reason. May not, however worth a try.
You can always try but it depends on the FFL. Some of the chain stores absolutely refuse to call in background checks and refuse to start another one. Like others have pointed out in previous threads, you can purchase another firearm at a FFL that will call it in. When that one clears, all of your outstanding BG checks will clear with it. From what I've heard, Sportsman's and Cabelas seem to be the worst at telling people to f-off after they have your money.

It's sportsman's — you're absolutely right.

Yah, more than likely most chains won't call in.

BiMart called in for me after it was rejected the first time (electronic, fell in queue), thankfully. That's how I found out that Massachusetts had zeroed out my Oregon drivers license. Some scam-o plandemic mass extension to drivers licenses (hadn't had a Massachusetts license in ?8 years?).

Used my CHL & instant on the phone-in, same call. Got a "new" Oregon DL (same #) that week, that "real ID" one.

Our regular FFL will sometimes call in, depends on the transaction & how busy they are. Ex, bought a STG-58 FAL from a California resident in person & they called it in. Shipped in internet stuff & direct buys they've just done the electronic.

Dropped by my local FFL yesterday to pick up a pistol I ordered. Only 1 guy working the counter and he had to carry his phone everywhere he went. Seems he'd been on hold with OSP for 8 hours already trying to call about a customer hold. My bgc went through instantly (gotta love having a unique last name) but there was a pile of rifles behind the counter waiting for cleared checks.

Can only speak towards my experiences with call ins.

Have heard of situations like you mention tho.

You can call the rep, eg Sen Kim Thatcher, who will actually make an earnest effort on your behalf, as she did, once for me, but I had much quicker luck by hauling my cookies down to Salem to sort things out at the OSP Firearm background check unit. That issue was settled in about 4 hours.
