Has anyone done a successful DIY nickel plate removal at home?

Looking at a S&W Model 36 in great mechanical shape, but the nickel plate is about 75% and looks pretty rough. I've never been a huge fan of nickel and am wondering if any here have had luck de-plating in their home shop. Via reverse electrolysis or chemical. I know it's technically possible, but some real world input would be appreciated. Thanks!

Allegedly soaking in white vinegar or acetone for 24+ hours will remove it as well. Never tried it though.

Yep. Not on a gun, but some medical parts that came back from the plater in horrid shape. Worked fine.

That is going to hinge on what I find under the plating. I would prepare myself for some 'surprises'
BTW, this is still a hypothetical C&R purchase, I was just fishing to see what nickel removal is like.
