Might try looking at hipoint, I personally have never owned one but lots of people say good things about them. They can be found new in 9mm for under $200 Another thought is to look for a good Ruger P series on the used market. I saw a p89 in excellent condition at a LGS the other day for $375 asking price. I have one of them that I bought new years ago and I love it. Damn, now I might have to go back and see if its still there.

I have a Polish P-64 in 9x18 makarov, cheap ammo and I made some spring upgrades:

Hammer spring replaced to bring DA pull from 20lbs down to 10lb.
Stronger recoil spring to reduce recoil.
