Hello,

Any thoughts useful knowledge on 10mm for defense? I have seen many ballistic tests with 10mm but I'm concerned it may be too much. I like to carry small, which is why I'm going to 380.

Split the difference and get a mid-size 9mm and use quality defensive ammunition in it ffs.

It's the Photographer, NOT the camera, its the fisherman, NOT the line or hook he is using. All that stuff is for the insecure to dick around with and avoid the hard work called PRACTICING PROPER TECHNIQUES !!! Learn to grip properly, learn a proper stance, get a proper sight picture ... these are whats going to matter most in accuracy. Practicing shooting at a paper target in the convenience of an air conditioned indoor shooting range is NOT going to help you AT ALL in a gunfight with an attacker OR TWO, who are both moving and shooting at you. YOUR MUSCLE MEMORY is THE ONLY thing that will keep you alive. Your logical brain will shut down completely. ALL the paper target shooting will be worth ZERO as the ADRENALINE DUMP turns your brain to mush. Guys, practice the right thing. Practice in reality. Stop worrying about make/model of your gun or even the caliber !!! They will ALL kill your assailant stone cold dead if you just know how to shoot correctly in a gun fight and actually hit what you think you're aiming at. I KNOW about such thing !

Ballistic gel tests are beneficial cuz it's more data but imo shooting animals is the most instructive. Fe those who shot animals with a .22, .22 mag, shotgun bird shot, shotgun slug, .308, 7mm, etc etc can tell you how they perform. Now extrapolate that real world experience to a human with sub optimal shots (Fe through the arm first before entering the torso), and likely variables such as moving target and it's not hard to piece together. Fe the other day someone said they shot a raccoon in the head with 22 mag and needed a follow up shot cuz it didn't do that much.

I think people get too caught up in trying to use the smallest power gun possible. I woudl rather have some over penetration than too little. As Clint smith says you never know ahead of time what the attack will look like or when it will occur. Use what you can shoot well that will do the job plus some for the intended target is my opinion.

Lots of variables out there like barriers (Fe car), armor, type of ammo chosen, capacity, (in particular in the instance of multiple attackers), that can't be predicted ahead of time. IMO shot placement is critical in every situation but shooting a moving and unpredictable target while you are under duress is much different than a paper target. What I mean is you may not have the opportunity for optimum shot placement or due to the situation you may not be as accurate as you are on the range shooting relaxed slow fire with no one trying to kill you. Imo having "too much gun" (as long as you can shoot it well) or "too much ammo" is a better problem to have than too little. All imo.

Fe lets say you are in or near your vehicle and multiple attackers, would you rather have just your edc or edc carry plus a handy sized more capable weapon such as short barreled 5.56, 300 BLK, or .308?

Convicted felon John Melvin "Gunkid" Davis was already Internet shooting legend, and not in a good way, when I was new to the game in college over twenty years ago. Can't find my source, but thought he did he Did the Dirtnap sometime in the 2010s.

I bet lulubelle has never served in the military Or seen what different calibers do to humans who have been shot with them. I have. And no every assassin doesn't use a 22 LR. Maybe some do. The guys I've known that have had to sneak up and take out a guard, if they didn;t do it with a knife, used a silenced center fire gun with subsonic ammo. And yes the action cycling makes noise all it's own. I think Lulu has been watching too many movies.

It's important to have the right ammo for whatever scenario you are likely to face. Over penetration is a big concern for me if I have to make a shot where there are other people around. I don't want a well placed round to zip on out the other side.

And yes he's right, shot placement is important, but are most of us going to be able to place a shot in the orbit of someone's eye under stress? Much less with a 22 LR, and be one shot done?

I had an interesting case once in the ER I worked at. A woman was shot in the head with a 22 LR and it went out the other side of her head. She was brain dead we discovered later, but we kept her alive long enough to harvest her organs. She was drunk and looking down the barrel of her Ruger 22 with her thumb in the trigger guard and shot herself in the eye, according to her husband that came with her via ambulance.

I've seen someone shot in the brow with a 22 and it didn't penetrate the bone.

I've seen someone shot with a center fire FMJ round in the abdomen and it went out their back.. I never heard where that round wound up.

If I had to pick a round for a gun I hadn't used or seen tests on, I would pick Hornaday's Critical Defense because I've seen independent tests, factory tests, and it doesn't seem to over penetrate regardless of barrel length or caliber. They adjust their powder loads and chamber pressures to get every caliber to penetrate no more than 16 inches through with a clothing barrier in front of the gel. I am not going to be shooting through auto glass or car doors in a self defense situation.

To not think about what you're shooting out of your EDC is irresponsible. You are responsible for where that bullet winds up, it's a good idea to pick one that stays in your target.

I want something that is going to dump its energy quickly and expand well, so I don't have to do a mag dump on an attacker. At close distances, there might not be time to get off more then one or two shots. Go ahead lulu if you want to make those shots with a 22, you wanna be assassin.
