Multnomah county would need 350 additional deputies to fill in for PPB's patrol officers. This doesn't include detectives, specialized units or additional command staff and training.

Before anyone says the state can assist, it can't. It would take more OSP than they currently have.

Even if an agency could help Portland it wouldn't. The Multnomah county DA won't do anything. There is a reason no agency (outside of Multnomah county borders) offers mutual aid. No agency wants the increased liability.

If you think the illegal street racing bad just wait until the news starts harping on the unsolved homicide rate.

Portland is getting the law enforcement they want. There are lots of decent people who reside in Multnomah but they are outnumbered.

This will take decades to resolve and with Portlands values and voting record I wouldn't put any faith in current and future leadership making the correct decisions.

edited to add:
No outside agency is working overtime for PPB.

The increased wait times and short staff is all attributed to no more OT being allowed by PPB. Last year was record breaking for OT. There were many officers who made more in OT than their base salary.

PPB needs more officers but very few candidates will accept the position.

On a positive note, surrounding agencies have picked up experienced PPB officers for less money than PPB pays.
On another somewhat positive note, as property values plummet, hopefully so will property taxes

You must be new here.

J/K!

We wish!!

I have worked in Real Estate since '99. Short of burning to the ground (and THAT is no guarantee), property valuations almost never get smaller.

My county has two sets of numbers. One is what they CAN assess you at, since Measure 5 capped annual increases. The other is what they WANT to charge you.

If you are unaware of both the city, county of state of Oregon's social justice programs I cannot help you.

Please spend time doing some research.
I have - and not found any. Googling again just now, all i can find is the city Office of Equity and Human Rights, which seems to be a staff of 13 who do reporting, advising, and education classes for municipal departments. Havent found anything about their budget yet, but havent searched the whole site yet.. and dont really want to

No one is stopping your city from dealing with the drug addict problem except the leadership of your city. Guess what - if you create a haven for drug addicts, you will attract drug addicts. And drug addicts will steal from you to support their habits, because - guess what - they don't work for a living. Not exactly rocket science.

ETA: and while they are doing their drugs, they will create mayhem in front of your expensive apartment because - guess what- they are drug addicts doing their drugs.
(Not sure if i replied to this yet or not, and this forum is too hard to navigate from my phone)

I dont disagree with you - but the solution isnt going to come from effective leadership. Were past that now. And i dont see any heroes rising up and getting on the ballot any time soon.

at this point, i suspect the city could potentially turn itself around by outsourcing city management from proven, effective leadership in other cities, but that would A) be expensive and B) require consensus on a direction to take the city, which is absolutely guaranteed to stall out in partisan political bullbubblegum. Because, sadly, anyone theyd be able to hire for the job would have had a D or R next to their name at some point, and thatd be the end of it.

It potentially COULD - providing it started with a mayor who has REAL leadership abilities, traditional ideals, is pro Law Enforcement and all things conservative and not a spineless, cowering weasel like Wheeler.

That sounds like a pretty big wishlist for PDX... Might as well add world peace to the list and ending world hunger, or getting the truth out of China on how Covid was created in their lab.

So what are the more practical potential solutions?
I have no ideas right now but I'll give it some thought.

What I have seen (and not only in Portland) over many years has been a gradual decline in quality city leadership and it has never been more apparent than in the last year.

It seems city leadership is no longer based on the needs of the 'citizens' and a desire to improve the city(s).

Can anyone say Portland, SEA, San Fran etc are better than say 10 year ago? NO. And why? Total and completely feckless, weak liberal and socialist ideals, programs, laws etc. that are effectively DESTROYING the cities.

Add Chicago and NYC to the list.
