And Chicago is a good example - How In the HeII can anybody (who is of sound mind and 'Normal') support and/or say Lightfoot is doing ANYTHING productive for Chitcago ?

Is she for real? I mean she says NOTHING of any value, seems to not care, and for all intents and purposes appears 'zombielike' and not really coherent of anything going on around her.

Almost anyone it seems could do a better job - which wouldn't take much.

What I have seen (and not only in Portland) over many years has been a gradual decline in quality city leadership and it has never been more apparent than in the last year.

It seems city leadership is no longer based on the needs of the 'citizens' and a desire to improve the city(s).

Can anyone say Portland, SEA, San Fran etc are better than say 10 year ago? NO. And why? Total and completely feckless, weak liberal and socialist ideals, programs, laws etc. that are effectively DESTROYING the cities.

I've heard suggestions that ordinary people get in local politics - city board, school board etc. Apparently it's gone well in a few places. I haven't really come up with anything else personally.

Even if the citizens could convince their elected officials you would be hard pressed to fill the positions with qualified candidates.

What are you talking about? Portland Downtown is clean and safe! It even says so on the trashcans! (picture below for reference)

Before one of the first 'riots' off SW 4th around Taylor st about 2pm I was downtown after work. Noticed two dumpsters filled neatly with cardboard, 2x4s. The metal stands, barrier pieces along the sidewalk. Later I saw that a ruckus with fire happened right there later.
Nice of 'someone' to lay out all the materials in advance, and if not, police should have known to clear the areas where 'riots' traditionally start.
Then it hit me. Gov wants shows of violence - normally useless punks - all over the news. It does very little to stop it, when it could all be stopped easily. Why? Because Gov needs justification for draconian laws against everyone, and eventually the boot. I swear one punk throwing a rock at window on SE Burnside was shown 500x times in a week.

So when friends of mine rant on about why police do nothing I simply reply "Think" - who eventually benefits.

Hey now, I'm a registered democrat so I can vote in the primaries for the candidate with the least amount of stench.

Yeah I hear ya'. I was always registered dem. Later on in that time I figured the same thing. THEN, it started getting so bad I decided I needed to stand up and be counted lest I be thought one of "Them". { shudder }

It potentially COULD - providing it started with a mayor who has REAL leadership abilities, traditional ideals, is pro Law Enforcement and all things conservative and not a spineless, cowering weasel like Wheeler.

I like that "Spineless cowering Weasel", though I don't think its correct associating a fine beautiful creature such as the weasel with the likes of tod whalen. "Spineless cowering wart" seems a more appropriate description.

(sigh) I thought you knew? Donald Trump, during the riots in potland in mid 2020, was speaking of our feckless mayor and his antics (lack of action) during that time. In one of two occasion he called him Tod Wheeler, and the other called him Ted Whalen. Therefor he'll always be "tod whalen" to me. Never capitalized.
