hey guys so I'm looking to add some light to my gun safe. I plan on adding some LED strips around the front of the inside but I'm not sure how to have them turn on. I already have a hole built in to run a cord to power the lights but I'd like the lights to turn on when the door is opened and shut off when the door closes. What's the best way to do this? Motion sensor outlet? Is there a magnetic switch that can be used on the door that turns on when the door is opened?

Here is what I did on the last one and it is great. Ebay'd 5 meter LED strip lighting, motion sensor, and power unit. about $20 and it ran all over the inside and bright as all get up.

If you have power in your safe you can use a motion sensor between the power and lights. That's what I used in my safe, they kick on as soon as I start opening the door. They are on a timer to turn off 5 minutes after I close the door. If no power in your safe, you can buy battery packs for the LED light strips and still use a motion sensor.

Also, don't forget 90 degree connectors, they will make your life a lot easier: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DM7F052/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

T connectors can also be helpful in running the light strips in a safe: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DM7F2T6/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&th=1

Awesome I will look into these!

I bought the LED rope to put into my safes but found the tiny screws ineffective and pulled out too easily for me to be happy. I put a hook 'n loop strip with a sticky back all the way around my inside door frame and then used velcro zip straps to hold it into place. Can be easily removed if need be but is held on firmly.

Did you use the adhesive back to mount them or did you buy something else? Wondering how well and how long the adhesive will last
No, I bought a roll of Velcro that sticker to the 'carpeted' walls. I ran that all around the inside of my door frame my door. At the same spot at HD they had Velcro straps (about 5" long or so) that i wrapped around the rope light and they would stick to the strip of Velcro around my door. Put mine on in summer and it is still up and working. Spent maybe $12-15.

I used the company MaxMySafe and they are excellent. Here is a link from another safe company that gets to the manufacturer in So. Cal.:

LED SMD Safe Light Kit System Cannon Liberty Sentry Stack On

Get the upgrade with the motion sensor that turns ON and OFF. Also, consider the larger one that gives 2 - 48" side panels plus a 20" top panel.

They have an additional plug in adapter, for if you have power, or batteries last about 6 months before you need to change them with "normal" usage.

That's actually a pretty good price.

Would I steer you wrong?????? :s0159:

They give a "Calguns" discount, 5% or so, if mentioned. Maybe you could ask for a "NorthWest Firearms" discount and expand their marketing horizons...:s0132:

Best thing about it is that it is pretty much plug and play. All the connectors are there already. If you have rug walls in the safe the velcro attached right to it. If not they supply the other side with sticky on one side and velcro loops on the other side.

No, I was wrong...the best thing is not having to be down on your hands and knees with a flashlight trying to see. With the motion sensor attachment it's kinda of self-re-enforcing like going to the refrigerator to see if the light comes on when you open the door :s0060:

Battery type lighting is a waste as the main source. These type EAT batteries. Use them only for back-up.
I've found the LED (self-adhesive) strip lights are the best way to go for the money.
Here is what I use.

Add this if if you want motion activation.
