Supposably The Feds do not keep gun a registry of guns bought. But what about the Oregon State Police? They give a number for each transaction, so if they are not tracking guns why the number?
If they are tracking guns is there a limit on how long they keep the records?

records are kept forever I am told.I know the gun dealers are supposed to,or so I'm told. The original purchase goes "somewhere" and is stored forever.I am sure there is more than one place it is deposited.

The SP are not suppose to keep records BUT. The FFL keeps his 'paper' work for ever. FTF is the best legal way to buy.
