I go through a lot of gun and recently ran out so I did what I think most of us would do I went to my local gun shop and what I noticed is gun oil is $1-4 an ounce depending on brand is it just me or does that seem unresonable? which brought me to thinking whats wrong with using motor oil instead at $3 a quart ? Do any of you use anything besides gun oil on your guns veg oil/motor oil ?

I have used marvel mystery oil when I dont plan on shooting for a little while. It seems to be a little thicker than gun oil. I havent had any issues in 1o years of using it.

Anything designed to work in an engine will work on a firearm. There is no "magic" to gun oil...a quart of 30W synthetic would last you years....and pay for itself fourfold.

I've been using ATF for awhile now, no issues. Have enough to last years.

Sewing machine oil, Marvel Mystery oil. Any oil that will not dry out.

I myself don't use "gun oil" for lubrication, but I use it(CLP) for cleaning. For lubrication I use automotive grease.

Tri-Flow. I have most of a gallon jug left from the days you could buy that quantity.

I use grease, and most any grease will do...even lubri-plate.

Oil runs and doesn't stay put.

ATF stinks up your gun. Smells like an old lady that never bathes.

I only use Mobil 1 synthetic oil, especially improtant in an AR or other auto weapon. It will not burn off like petroleum based lubes such as CLP. I did just order some stuff called Frog Lube that was invented by a Navy SEAL and is getting good reviews from the guys over at the Sniper's Hide forum.

I do just the opposite. I use gun oil in my car's engine. It does a better job than motor oil. :bluelaugh:

Now that is an expensive oil change!:bluelaugh:

I have heard about people using synthetic motor oil on guns. When my bottle of gun oil runs out, I may give it a try.

Lube is lube. Doesn't matter what kind.

Gun oil, Motor oil, tranny fluid or KY.

You think the stuff in "gun oil" was discovered shortly after the invention of guns? It's just a substance that someone found had the right characteristics for use in guns and decided to rebrand as "gun oil," along with a suitably inflated price, of course. If it works, it works, regardless of price of or label.

seriously I have used motor oil, bearing grease, I stay away from thin oils like atf. Still like CLP or Breakfree.
