As gun lovers we all need to develop special skills to survive. I do not mean out in the world. I mean survive the questioning glances, distrustful attitudes, and downright contempt we face from our spouses when it comes to our hobbies (and our desire to spend great amounts on money on said hobbies).

I was reading a thread this morning from a poster that stated he got busted looking at a gun auction by his daughter and trying the old "I love you" garbage to con his wife.

I immediately thought..."You always (and I mean ALWAYS) have a porn site loaded up in another tab that can quickly be switched to if someone else in the house gets too close while you are looking at gun auctions." It is just common sense. :)

Does anyone else have any tips to survive being the only gun nut in a normal household.? :)

While one would hope the family is generally supportive and trained - and mine is - at some point we all face THE question. You know the one - "What do you need ANOTHER one of those for? It looks just like your other ones . . . can't you use them?"

Years ago, when I was trying to explain to my Wife that my new 1911 was nothing like the other four I own, and totally worth the money, it hit me. A separate 'fun' account is necessary to a happy marriage. If it doesn't come from the household budget, it doesn't count. . .

Good points. You can risk invalidating your past decisions in the eyes of a spouse.

first gun:
"honey, we need a gun for home protection"

second gun:
"honey, this has different capabilities"

...

sixth:
"honey, now that we have a very capable arsenal for many situations, we need to start thinking about redundancy"

You see where this goes? This starts to sound like my wife asking "I need a sixth pair of heels, that are specific for winter evening wear".

I like Abunai's point about distinguishing the "needs" and "wants", possibly with a fun budget.

Being a gun nut IS normal in my household! When I get a new toy, I have to get my wife one too! The last one I got her was a Draco Pistol...

You could try making a "gun fund" account or jar and get your wife on-board with that being for a new gun. Once it is full - she can't say a word...

You should not have to hide it at all. If you have a healthy relationship with your spouse then she knew what she was getting into from the beginning. If your a real gun nut it would be impossible to hide it. When you walk into my place it screams gun crazy.

I have no clue about hints for the following reasons:

1.) My household may not be considered normal by most.

2.) My wife has no issue with guns in the house, she enjoys shooting and hunting as much as I do.

My wife an I have seperate accounts for personal spending. We each have an agreed upon allowance. She buys what she wants and I buy what I want. She never bugs me about what I buy and I leave her alone with her 6th coach purse or 20th pair of shoes. It works pretty well. I make it a point to keep the guns safe and she does not leave her shoes in the middle of the floor. No problems. My kids go shooting with me, the wife has completed a handgun safty course, so guns don't scare them.

That would be like me spying on my wife to see what she is looking at on line or ordering.
She ask what I'm looking at and that is about the extent of the interest.

But you are right - little sense of humor in the northwest

Just explain to your wife that guns are your accesories, much like her shoes or purses. you need different guns for different occaisions. Not every gun goes with every outfit. using that explanation worked so well for me that my wife just bought me a huge safe so i had room to expand my collection.

+1

Try to get your significant other into guns. If she/he catches you looking at gun porn, just use the old "I was just thinking about a gun for you...this one would rock and I don't like the idea of you not being able to defend yourself when I'm not around" line.
Even if they aren't into guns hopefully they will appreciate the fact you were thinking about them and want them to be safe. Switching tabs quickly makes it look like you were looking at something you know you shouldn't be.
