As a convert to the mindset that firearms are in fact inanimate objects, not evil incarnate and that people have a right to defend themselves, ect ect. I'd say that it's worth it to try and see if you can change the minds of those around you who may be on the fence about firearms, and maybe even people who have more set in stone ideas about guns.

Part of the problem is that if you didn't grow up with guns and don't know anything about them, your idea of guns comes from the media, movies, TV, the press and from people around you who are equally uneducated and unfamiliar with firearms. (as was the case for me growing up in Canada). As a result feelings on the matter are based on the myth of the gun, not anything factual. The myth of the gun often includes all sorts of silly assumptions.

Such as that only criminals have and use guns ( and no law abiding citizen has ever saved their life by defending themselves with a gun). This one is reinforced by the media, since drive bys and gang related shootings can be sensationalized for tonight's news entertainment.

Also that availability of guns increases crime, number of violent crimes and so on.

Another myth is that only police, military and security personnel can handle firearms competently and have the proper training. (Of course we know that there are several excellent schools that train civilians in everything from basic firearms safety, right on up to SWAT level tactics)

For me when these kinds of myths were dispelled I began to warm up to the idea of owning firearms. Then I went on a trip and visited an indoor range where I learned one of the best (or worst) kept secrets about shooting, it's fun! I saw how people could easily get into shooting both for fun and competitively. I was still a little apprehensive about guns at this point (due to lack of familiarity) but I was on my way to becoming more interested and even liking guns.

So it's not all hopeless, there are some of us "gun ignoramuses" who can have our minds changed. Maybe there's hope for the gun haters too.

I find it interesting how some people you all tried to convince chose to ignore your arguments. It's unfortunate how close minded people can be, going so far as to ignore logic and facts, sticking their fingers in their ears and going "la la la"

It's called, "I reject reality and substitute my own" syndrome.

BTW- welcome to these forums!

A lot of liberals simply need something to hate or disagree with. Common sense, facts and statistics mean zero to the hardcore liberal. Lots of hypocrisy within the liberal ranks also. Probably the best example is the armed bodyguard Rosie O'Donnel has.

So they have a strong conviction to a belief despite superior evidence? That is a delusion.

You are correct. My experience with liberals (especially the worst) is they will continue to argue a point despite overwhelming evidence. I simply do not, and probably never will, understand the liberal mentality and what 'turned' them to think and believe the way they do.

Like history showing that communism and socialism are evil, murdered MILLIONS, and have never worked except for those at the top?

My point is how does a person 'become' liberal? Is it environmental? The product of liberal parents? A natural weakness that manifests itself into making one follow anti-establishment thinking and beliefs? It has to be something profound because most liberal thinking and beliefs are in complete opposition to most beliefs that could be considered traditionally American.

I have heard it postulated that a "true believer" leftist-liberal has "daddy issues". Daddy wans't there, daddy didn't pay me enough attention, daddy was an a-hole, daddy did too much for me... or they were bullied as a kid. In either case most (not all) leftist-liberals are "angry at something" and want to strike back no matter what it costs anyone.

D. all of the above?

I think people are drawn to liberalism because it's idealistic. No matter how impractical or impossible it may actually be, it always sounds and looks good on the outside.

Today's liberals try to paint a rosy picture of fairness, kindness, generosity, and peaceful community (which I'm, pretty sure everyone would like), but they conveniently leave out (or refuse to believe or accept) all of the aspects of planning, hard work, and sacrifice that must often be made in order to have and maintain those things. People more readily accept the pretty lie than the ugly truth. And liberals and their ideals are more than happy to accommodate them.

I think the liberalism we're familiar with now days mostly appeals to people (for the most part) who are looking for the easiest path in life, with the least amount of effort and resistance. For some... It's easier to blame others for their own faults, shortcomings, or weakness. It's easier to try and change the game than it is to play by the rules. It's easier to make excuses and exceptions. It's easier to be a victim than the victor. It's easier to quit than succeed. It's easier to take from someone else than provide for yourself. It's easier to try and control others than it is yourself. It's easier to find temporary solutions to a problem than solve it once and for all. It's easier to feel sorry for yourself or others than accept what has happened and move forward. If you can't elevate yourself, lower the bar. I think liberalism appeals to and preys upon people who have a propensity for thinking and feeling this way already. People who feel unaccepted, inadequate in some way, victimized, discontent, etc.... and then just exacerbates it by continuing to send the message that people can't do, or be better.

I think calling most of them liberals or progressives is actually misleading. Most don't favor or advocate for freedom, or reform for the betterment of society. Only the betterment of themselves and their situation. If they wanted society as a whole to thrive and be free they would let it naturally dictate who succeeds and fails instead of regulating and manipulating and trying to pass losers off as winners. All they do is manipulate and advocate in their favor, and for lowering standards. They don't strive for betterment of any kind, they settle for mediocrity and failure. A society full of unfit and untested 'winners' isn't a better society, and it isn't progress by any stretch of the imagination. Most of today's liberals and progressives should be called what they actually are.... whiners and sore losers.

Get MIL a copy of Armed and Female by Paxton Quigley. Paperback won't cost much.
Perhaps also Ayoob's The Truth about Self-Protection.

But if she's truly one who believes a woman raped and strangled with her own panyhose is morally superior to a woman explaining to police how her attacker got the fatal bullet wound, then you may get nowhwere.

It's been said that a liberal is a conservative who hasn't yet been mugged.

MIL may simply have a very fatalistic outlook and be unwilling to protect herself.

The typical liberal mom, if honest, will admit that given a gun in hand and a violent rapist with a butcher knife attacking her daughter in front of her, she could use a gun.
