You money would be better spent at MLC behind K-Mart or Ole's Gun Shop, if you are wanting to support a local business. This place is just a step above The Gun Room in Portland, that about as nice as I can be towards this store.

I can handle paying a little more for something in stock and supporting a local business, if the Customer Service is good. Maybe this place has changed since I've been there which was about 5 yrs. ago when I started working in Salem.

Whether I'm buying a gun, car, T.V or whatever, I make a point to test the waters before parting with my money. I'm one to stop after work in my dirty *ss Carhartts and act like an uniformed buyer to see how I'm treated and whether you'll blow smoke up my backside. Fail the test and I take my hard earned money elsewhere.

After reading many of the other posts here, I see I made the right choice.

Orygun, Exactly, people work hard for their money and being treated right and fairly is just the right thing for a business owner to do. As it has been mentioned Mic or Ole are a really good option in the Salem area. The big box stores are always touch and go when it comes to service and knowledgeable staff. I have shopped all three. I just don't feel guncrafters are straight up.

Well thats why there is more than one type of gun,car paint or what ever..... I have known Doug at guncrafters for a long time and always had good dealings, Price is normally pretty good. Ole's gun shop gets a fair amount of my $ they have a great custom gunsmith Named Kevin who does very nice work. Jason at Blackwater tactical ( 12th and Cross0 behind salem emblem runs a great store and has the best survice anywhere.... I thought my couple times into MLC that the survice was crap and the dude running the store . was blowing alot of BS. . . . . This is a great country and you can spend your $ where and with who you like..

Good points, I need to revisit my thinking. I don't shop in Salem much so... I can be laboring on very old information. If a store has been good to you, it is worth supporting them.

Strange. Some posters on this thread that have only posted on this thread and haven't visited the site for a long time. Either posting to the High Heavens about how wonderful this shop is, or just the opposite about how poor this shop is. Make me think somethin's fishy here.
Never been to this place. Sounds kinda like the Gun Room's sister store. If I'm ever in the neighborhood though, I'll have to check it out for myself.

That is probably the best thing to do. I have lived in the Salem area for a long time. Old bias are slow to loose. I haven't shopped Oles in a long time, but I did alot. Ole is a great guy. The same with Mic. I think, like going out to eat, a bad experience for what ever reason can do the same thing. Not ever going back. There is also the personality thing, we all don't fit in. If you never been there give them a try. Even a bad shop is better than having to drive a hour or more to another shop for something small. I was fortunate, the town just North of me had two fine gun shops now there is one.

Doug should not be allowed to do business of any sort. I went in and tried to buy 3 boxes of 9 mm ammo cuz we were going camping and shooting all weekend. All he would sell me is 1 box even thoughs he had a bunch of boxes behind him on the shelf. Yes, he had a sign on the door that told of the ammo shortage, but it was the way he treated me about it. All I did is ask him why and he took the 1 box back from me, put it on the shelf and went on helping someone else while mumbling "go buy your stuff at Walmart". I was blown away, but he was right, drove down south commercial and bought 3 boxes at $3 a box cheaper.

That is a typical visit to his shop, I cant believe he still has a limit on ammo with the current supply levels available all over. I used to stop in there once or twice a year when in Salem but the last several visits have not been any better than yours. He lost out on a few sales of guns with me due to the attitude he has, I go to Ole's exclusively when in the area.

This was in 09' so I'm not sure if he still does that or not but I sure wont go try and find out lol....I now buy bulk 9mm ammo from CNS in Albany. When in Salem I pretty much stick to the Gun Shop behind Kmart on 25th. Is that Ole's?

for ammo in salem, don't forget NW ammo supply, a bit hard to find (west of airport in industrial area) but the prices & attitudes are great there.

The last place I go or call when i need something and can't wait for mail order.

I would give them a neg 1 if possible. The big gun that acts like he owns the place jerked me around when I first got an AR and didn't know any better.

I had purchased all the parts I needed to build an upper and called them to see if they had one of those AR wrenches in stock as I didn't have one. He goes on to tell me how crazy i am for trying to put an upper together myself and they see blown up ARs in all the time from people that don't know what they are doing and buy parts that don't work together. He tells me the upper needs to be head spaced and if it's not it could blow up on me. I respond by telling him that I didn't think the upper in an AR actually could be headspaced wrong by it's design. He insists that it has to be checked and adjusted to be safe.

So i give in and take it down to his "AR Specialist" to have them put the upper together for $50 or something like that. I figured it was better than having it blow up on me. The "specialist" put it all together in about 15 minutes and hands it back to me. I then asked the "specialist" how the headspacing came out. His response was "you don't headspace an AR" and acts like i'm an idiot. So i insist that I want it checked since that was the reason I had them do it.

So the dude checks the headspacing which takes another 2 minutes and then charges me an extra fee for "headspacing" my upper.

That was the last $ they got from me.

I also read a number of the posts in this thread. Not every one, but a number and noticed that some of the supporters of the business had only made one single posts on the site. Seems a little odd that you would sign up here just to tell people how great some shop is that is clearly not great.

I also don't care if they have high prices or not. I don't expect a shop to sell at mart prices and I wouldn't either if I owned a shop. They need to drop the attitude though. I have been in there and was ignored by the folks there that had time to help me.

I gave it a fair rating. First couple times it was a negative experience. Very first time Doug was a genuine jerk. He was making comments that didn't make any sense to get a sale. Then he implied we had removed some Wby Vanguard targets around that come with those rifles. We walked out with our money and made a purchase at Ole's. Last time I was in Doug was either on his meds or was in a very good mood. He actually treated me like human being. Doubt I will ever make a major purchase there though.
