I think we can learn:

1. Over-zealous anti-gun lobbyists and politicians are ironically our own best friends when it actually comes time to vote; but in the mean time they keep the debate and media attention alive indefinitely.

2. Despite what any pundit or any poll result says, there is little consensus on what "common-sense" solutions (or effective solutions, or any other kind of solutions) actually are. And so, the issue remains in the forefront of national debate.

3. Pro-gun folks are thus fighting a holding action against future events and public sentiment, trying to defend the castle of our rights from frontal attacks, midnight raids, siege tactics, attrition, betrayal from within, and even from pests gnawing away at our supplies. Defending the status quo indefinitely is a losing proposition.

Unfortunately, the only real relief we can expect IMHO will be non-gun-related major news events that steal the national attention, and advancing our causes in the next few elections.
