As far as getting involved. or not , as one may wish....

Why does this have to be a hard and fast rule or the like....
Life will not play by you rules , wants or desires.

Every situation will be different .
At one place in time...it would be helpful and wise to get involved...
At another place in time...it would be better to not get involved.

Learn to read the room , so speak.. Do what is best in that situation at that time....
And understand that the next time will probably be different.

More food for thought. Especially in domestic violence situation, the abused may turn and attack the "savior". It's not as likely in this situation, but being Portland, it's very possible that the two may have been in a relationship. Do not take this in any way as being against that particular lifestyle.

Without knowing what you're walking into, it's very possible and extremely likely that you will make a wrong choice and you will be prosecuted and sued for any intervention. Especially with the likes of the DA found in Portland.

Where I grew up if we witnessed a couple of (mutual) combatants rolling on the ground with one chomping on the others head, there's a good chance one of us would have doused the both of them with a hose or a bucket of water.

In the Portland Reddit thread interesting discussion how passive and tolerant Portland residents are. Several
native New Yorkers posting that NYC would not put up with this…
I’m thinking these New Yorkers are all talk. There are all kinds of videos with tweakers/junkies/etc attacking others and otherwise being disgusting/inappropriate on the NY subway system and trainloads of bystanders either watching passively or moving away from the offender. Not that this excuses Portland, though.

And people just stood around and watched a 78 year old man get his ear chewed off? Is this who we are as a society now?
Yes. NOBODY is coming to save you. YOU are your own first responder. And that's going to suck if you're a woman, old, have physical issues/limitations, are a pacifist, etc.

I do not go out unarmed at this point. Not ever. If I can't carry there, I won't go there, unless I don't have a choice like court or a federal building that I must go to.

When I was single, I would consider intervening. Now with a family and with the aggressive prosecution of self defense in Portland, am I willing to have my support of my family ended for a stranger? I can sacrifice myself but have no right to sacrifice my family. In a civilized America that wouldn't be an issue.
I was accosted at Chicago's 35th street elevated station near midnight once. Fortunately, I happened to be carrying a 3/4 inch breaker bar. When I pulled that out, the other party apparently suddenly remembered a prior appointment and ran off. The objects of this forum make even better defensive tools!

Portlander here... Yeah solv3nt is right, the kneejerk county response could be quite hostile if a man intervened in this type of scenario. In the minds of most here, it'd be:

- Some republican "Rambo" attacked a homeless individual having a crisis.
- Even if the 78yo could testify, he might be confused and testify against you
- If you fired more than one round, or ricocheted, you'd be labeled a 'mass shooter' by WW
- If you shot a "POC", a felony of some kind would be assured
- "Why didn't you shoot him in the leg?" etc

Y'all really can't underestimate the ignorance around guns here - eg talking about M114, most of the women here think a "clip" wears out after it's discharged. Our selection process also ensures only sheltered housewife-types will be your jury.

Anyway, this is why I usually carry a taser here in Portland, sometimes in addition to CC. Most gun homicides are R60s/Hoovers etc killing each other, visitors are more likely to get attacked by a crazy bum like this.

As a bystander, My opinion is not to help. You don't know what's going on and all you see is struggling, screaming and blood, do you want to get closer to see what's actually happening? The intial reports that he was stabbing the victim. at 2am in the morning and you do not want to confront an armed man and put your own life in danger. Just get away and call 911. Let the police handle it. It doesn't pay to be a hero.
Now, if you seen what happened from the beginning and if you know for sure the person is not using a weapon. Maybe, you could have help the victim.
And that's why this kind of crap keeps happening! The 'I don't want to get involved' attitude is leading straight down the highway to Hell for our once great nation. Be part of the solution, not just another bump in the road.
I am so tired of this society of gutless wimps!!!

As for the mental health issues that is a real issue also. But also I think many times the “mental health” issues are used as an excuse for behavioral issues. No accountability why behave?
Nobody born with a mental illness was also born with a drug addiction. Anyone who voted for Measure 110 has that victims blood on their hands!!!

Yep they are trying to make it illegal for a person to have a mag over 10 rounds to defend themselves but it's perfectly legal for people to use drugs that turn them into zombies (fentanyl) or make them violently insane (the new meth). What kind of F'ed up logic is that?

Before long taxes will be double what they are now just for support programs to deal with this chaotic mess they are making (and zero dollars will go towards the actual causes of the mess btw, their own idiotic policies). Portland has already spent $75 million on hotels for the homeless for example.

I would think each situation would merit its own decision, but self-preservation is goal #1. You are of no use to anyone, including the victim, if you also end up a victim. Much like diving into a raging river to save a drowning victim only to end up also drowning.

We were at a beach in Hawaii on the eastern shore where the wind and waves were up. People came down to swim, which is a terrible idea.

We hear yelling and someone grabbing a little ring and starts running out into the ocean. Eventually we see two heads that start moving further and further out. At the time, I was doing a lot of spear diving and was perfectly at home on the water. She asks us I was planning on heading out, I have her am emphatic no, as that current is ripping and I would just make another lost body for the coast guard to look for. We were another 100y down from where the life ring was.

Someone else took off after and they were able to save the first one, then the second after a very long swim.

Even though they were kids, I was not going to leave my kids without a father due to the stupidity and lack of planning of others.

Stay safe out there kiddos.

This member ^^ gets it.

If you don't live in a place that has turned portland you can not get it. From Montana? You can't quite understand. Like a "Man" could never, ever, understand what giving birth to a child is like. Driving around and seeing zombie like people walk out into moving traffic, stopping in front of a car that honks and scream threats at them while advancing on their car. Watching shoplifters go out of stores with no resistance. Seeing no police on the streets. Being put on hold when calling 911 in the middle of the day. The homeless camps. The graffiti. The trash piles dumped on a weekly basis in store parking lots. The news stories of someone beating the hell out of some old person being arrested and released within a few hours.

Hard to tell what I would have done. I wouldn't have been there at 2:30 in the morning, that's for G-D sure! I don't carry a firearm in the city. I don't have a body that could defend myself anymore, physically, against a crazed dirt bag I don't think.

You forget- the liberal agenda is to render this country UNGOVERNABLE by any means possible, and destroy us as a significant world power.

Something that I haven’t seen mentioned is anything about the guy who was attacked.
According to this article and a few others, the man attacked had recently been evicted from his home, where he was placed after being released from prison where he had been due to sex crimes committed on a minor. Even at 78 years old, he couldn’t stick to the agreement that kept him in the halfway house.
