Well, I was looking around at ammo this weekend. Bi Mart had Winchester 40gr Copper jacketed 22 LR 333 round box ammo for $14.99 a box. I got two. That is the cheapest I've seen it. It came to about 4.3 cents a round.

Lucky Gunner had Underwood 45ACP JHP at 1000 FPS in 20 round boxes for $13.00 a box. I bought 14 boxes. I did manage to see a gel test video of this stuff on YT and out of a 3.5 inch barrel it still expanded without over penetrating. The reason I bought 14 boxes was because I had a coupon and adding the 13th and 14th boxes got me free shipping and basically two of the boxes came out free that way.

Then Velocity Ammo Sales out of Va had Cor-Bon 45 ACP JHP +P rated at 1150 FPS for $21.00 a box, and everywhere else I looked it was at least $29.00 a box. So I ordered 11 boxes. Again, the 11th box got me free shipping.

Between this Black Friday weekend, and the weekend before, I've spent overnight 600 bucks on ammo. I have three shelves in my ammo safe. Two are almost full. The top shelf is empty, and the bottom area that is about the same height and depth as the two full shelves has a tote of accessories and another one full of holsters. I'm saving the top shelf for shotgun rounds.

If anyone is interested, Lucky Gunner has over 100 boxes of the 45 ACP still at that price.

An idea for when your shelves get full, if you have a slab:

Now have this one plus a full length 2x4 one. Full length one has center cinder block support. Plus overflow bulk of less used, canned in less accessible stowage.

Just curious, why shelf them vs just stack them as intended? This would save a lot of space.

I like you have yours labeled. I go one step further and I have a set of the multi color electrical tape. I put a small piece on each can, for example Yellow = rimfire, Blue = rifle, Red = pistol, White = reloading supplies. This makes it much quicker to sort through dozens of cans.

I'd do it that way, so you can slide out one at a time and not have to remove and restack.

Just as @1911Fanatic mentioned, accessability.

Overflow bulk is canned/stacked in standard .50's & .30's on 2x4's (off cement), plus some canned in monster oversize ammo cans on dollies. A chore to restock from such onto the shelves. Not horrendous, just a chore. Where's the shelved cans are easy for pre-range & range use convenience.

No cans go directly on slab. Dunno if it helps or not, but I figure the slab being a giant heat sink, cans off the slab could prevent condensation in cans. All cans have desiccants packets too.

You are my hero. That is the best, most organized ammo supply I've ever seen . I have an ammo safe that is rapidly approaching capacity. It's almost as tall as I am, but it's not just full of ammo. I have my supply of mags in there with the holster's on the bottom.

I'm waiting on my son to arrive in a few weeks to bolt them to the floor. I was gunless for many years due to disability. He got me back into shooting last summer. I was down to 1 gun, a 22. My son gifted me a Colt Python and a Colt Custom Shop 1911 after I had given him my last center fire gun. He also bought me a Ruger 22 magnum revolver as well.

I have some airtight and water tight ammo cans that I'm saving for bulk, unpackaged ammo and reloads. My son and I are going to start reloading this spring. This will be the second time around for me and the first time for him.

Thanks & good on you all!

-Stay away from plastic cans for long term ammo storage. Use military surplus or new manufacture metal. The plastic ones are handy for some stuff & for some usage, just not LTS of ammo nor components. IMO.

Yeah, I basically use them to transport to and from the range, where I might have to walk in the rain. But, as they are all I have right now, I will use them with desiccants inside.

If I do buy a bulk pack of say 1000 rounds, I will put them in the cans as the bulk packaging sucks and it will get shot in short order anyway. I have them in5 box trays. I have two of them. They are smaller. They hold about 500 rounds each of 45 ACP.

They they tend to crack and or bend if you stack em too high. I only have 2 trays of five containers. But, by this time next year, I hop to have one wall set up like your system with shelves of metal cans I can slide in and out easily. Gotta wait for my son to move his apartment goods out of my garage first.

The ones we have are the simplest & seem the safest too. Weight capacity wise. 2x4 & cinder block. Not my idea, forget honestly where I took it from, here or another board.

3 2x4 per shelf, with a gap between each 2x4. Cut 2x4 as a riser each cinder block. Perfect for .50 & .30 cans long ways (end towards you), plus space for lateral cans behind those. Also can support 30mm cans, which can get CRAZY heavy depending what's stored.

I have more ammo coming next week. I ordered a case and a half if Cor-Bon and a case of Underwood. Both +P 45 ACP. I may buy a few more cases of the Underwood as it's loaded with Hornaday FTX or XTP or something, but it's only 13 dollars a box of 20. I've paid more per round for decent FMJ rounds. So I can use it for training and carry it as well.

I went through my ammo safe and did some re arranging and took inventory. I've cracked 10,000 rounds but over 6000 of that is rimfire, which if my son, wife and I shoot 22's as a family at the range, that's only about 6 trips to the range. BiMart had the best sale over Black Friday for Winchester CPRN 22 LR. It came to 4 cents a round. I only bought about 666 rounds. And wouldn't you know it, I had just enough money for the round found of the Beast. I should have bought their last case of that.

I only have 9mm and 45 ACP for center fire pistols. Two 1911's and five 9mm's. My only other center fire gun is my Python.

I put all of my ball ammo into the plastic ammo cans. 350 rounds of 45 ACP and 800 of 9mm. I will through some desiccant's in there tomorrow. I also have about 800 rounds of various 9mm defensive ammo. I have only a few hundred rounds of 45 ACP defensive ammo. I use the ball basically just for plinking and breaking in guns. I tend to train with what I carry as far as the JHP's go. I hope to start doing some of my own gel testing starting late Spring.
