Went out to Tri County yesterday afternoon to pop off a few rounds....weather was warm (it was nice not to freeze at the bench)but certainly blustery.

I was running some hand loads through the Savage 12 VLP (.223) and was doing well at 200 yards (almost everything in the X circle of a 200 yard target) with some 50gr V-Max pushing about 3000 fps.....so I decided to push it to 300 yards. I've never shot at this distance before so did not quite know what to expect.

The game certainly changes at that distance....after adjusting for drop and getting settled, I was getting everything in the 10 ring of a 200 yard target, but boy was it work. That little projectile was all over the place at that distance. Ballistics predict a 1/3 drop in speed at that range, and I can believe it, and of course anything I did wrong was amplified....!

Bottom line, I was actually quite surprised at how well a 50gr round worked at that distance in those conditions....really did not think that it would be the case. Actually managed two dead centers at that range too....maybe head back and do some actual MOA measurements to see how things group from a sled one day.
