A couple of years back, on Traditional Muzzleloading Forum Flintlock Musket Reenactor, there was a thread about the Girandoni airgun, owned by the president of Beeman Arms and on loan to the NRA museum/collection. In the journal, mention was made that this air rifle had a broken internal spring, and that the blacksmith on the expedition made a repair using a piece of metal from another non-gun-related source.

When THIS gun was dismantled for routine maintenance, it was found to have a repaired trigger latch spring - repaired in exactly the way that the journal describes.

THIS therefore, is 99.9% certainly THE Lewis & Clark expedition airgun, and an irreplaceable part of American story that is way beyond any intrinsic value that might be put on it. It literally not only witnessed the expansion of America, but probably played the most important and humane part in achieving it that was possible to imagine.

tac, about to leave for Orygun.

In February of this year there was a Girandoni on display at the Evergreen Museum in McMinnville.
