This is a good example of the iconic German Gewehr 1888 "Commission Rifle", also know as the GEW88 or the Gewehr 88. it was manufactured by the Steyr Mannlicher firearms division of Osterreichische Waffenfabriksgesellschaft, (CEWG, Austrian Arms-Manufacturing Company) in Austria.
These rifles were originally chambered for 7.92 Patrone 88 ammunition and had a fitted magazine. As with virtually all Gewehr 88 rifles in service , this example has the tale "notch" cut into the rear of the receiver ring to except the slightly longer spritzer-type S Patrone cartridge. this indicates it was converted to take the 7.92 x 57 mm Mauser S Patrone, and has an S stamped above the chamber, indicating the conversion. The Spitzer-shaped cartridge was ballistically superior to the M/88, however the chamber required modification to accept the thicker walled shell casing. This particular rifle does also have notched plates welded to the rear of the receiver on either side to accept the 1905 pattern stripper clips, making this a Gewehr 88/05 S. there is a 1914 date on the magazine floor plate indicating the year it was converted.
It retains its unusual correct M-1888 cleaning rod with double slots. The right side of the receiver is marked Gew. 88 in German blackface type and serial number 8551 S on the barrel and receiver. Over the chamber it is marked
CE/WG/STEYER/ 1890. However in addition this rifle was then shipped to Germany's World War I Ally Turkey, who stamped a CRESCENT MOON with Turkish writing on all bolt components.
Rifle is in good used condition. An absolutely genuine GERMAN contract M-1888 service rifle issued to German Infantry and subsequently shipped as Military aid to Turkey during or before World War I. This possibly saw service on Two fronts of the Great War. Ready for display. Addition pictures if needed, just PM me. NO FFL! Thank you

THIS RIFLE IS LISTED AS AN ANTIQUE AND THERE IS NO FFL REQUIREMENT! IT CAN BE SHIPPED PERSON TO PERSON!

Have you fired this or gotten it checked by a smith to see if it's still safe to fire?
I have a number of these and have found the 88/05's to be usually well burnished and good shooters. They are. 323 not the feared .321 often called .318 (a commercial bore) by many. You can run any modern ammo through these but I would actually skip the high pressure Turk surplus.
