What does he have to lose ? Sheriff is essentially a politician - elected by the people, and can be recalled by the people. So if people in his county are idiots, then he has to play along to keep his job. And I know that some forum members will not see them as idiots, point stays the same - sheriff does what people tell him to.

I don't think this guy is your typical politician; he seems to have a little better moral compass.

His attitude fits in better with the crowd here, but he's still a typical politician, appealing to his electorate. That's why it's a sheriff in rural county of just over 32000 people and not the police chief in Palo Alto or Berkeley, CA saying this.
