I'm no expert but you can catch them year round. Are you fishing in the bay or in the surf? Some folks believe they taste better in winter months. I saw serval fishman in the surf near Oceanside catching on mussels a week ago. Good Luck.

I lived in brookings for years, use small 🍤 shrimp, place a large bobber about 4' from the hook, split shot above and below the bobber. This keeps it out of the kelp beds, seconds after the cast you got one. Purple surf perch are active 24-7-365. Bring a 5 gallon bucket and fill it in short time.
